The Gay Beggars present this early modern folk horror, running December 6th to 14th.

England, 1971. A black dog is barking on the moors.

Strange happenings are afoot in the village of Edmonton: the local troupe of Morris dancers have fallen out ahead of their annual performance. Two villagers are engaged to be married, but one of them harbours a scandalous secret. And, driven by the superstitions of her whispering neighbours, Elizabeth Sawyer is accused of witchcraft.

It’s getting cold outside. A waxing moon creeps into the sky. Elizabeth Sawyer is trying to stay warm in her hovel on the outskirts of the village. And when she turns on the television, an unexpected visitor arrives.

Written in 1621 by John Ford, Thomas Dekker and William Rowley, The Witch of Edmonton is an early modern folk horror that challenges the hardened beliefs of its day, and in doing so reveals the dark underside of England’s green and pleasant land.

Shows will be on December 6th, 7th, 8th (matinee), 12th, 13th and 14th at Nadelberg 6, Basel. Performances start at 19:30 except for the matinee show on Dec. 8th, which will start at 16:30.
