It’s the beginning of the end of summer. You can always tell because tonight, Theatre Spektakel opens its doors over at Landiwiese. Two weeks of thought-provoking art, dance and music, set against the azure waters of the lake and the magnificence of the Alps.

There’s a lot going on and, even if you don’t catch a show, it’s a great place to hang out, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy some refreshments. Check out their full program and here are my four tips for this week.

Gaming culture meets electronic rock as The Living Tombstone rolls into Zurich this Saturday. The platinum-selling duo of Yoav Landau and Sam Haft made their name with music inspired by the gaming world, particularly Five Nights at Freddy’s, before evolving into something altogether bigger. Their live shows collide rock, electronica, animation and internet culture as the Multiplayer Tour hits Komplex 457. If your musical tastes were forged somewhere between YouTube, gaming and pounding guitars, this one’s for you.

If you’re planning to spend the afternoon at the Letten lido, piled up with fellow sun worshippers like pancakes at an all-you-can-eat buffet, there’s really no better warm-up spot than Café des Amis in Wipkingen. Just a few steps uphill from Zurich’s favourite Limmat Riviera, this neighbourhood café has been a charming little refuge for years and is as cosy as your favourite sofa cushion. And as for the brunch menu – now served daily until 2pm – I’d even brave a head-first dive into cold water. (If there is any.)

John Nassour from the Technical University of Munich and his team have developed a rather clever exoskeleton glove that could one day give people with paralysed hands a little independence back. Sensors read electrical signals from the forearm, while machine learning works out when the wearer wants to grasp something; pneumatic cushions then help the fingers move. In trials, the glove helped people with severe impairments perform everyday tasks, including picking up cutlery. It still looks a little cumbersome, but the technology behind it is already showing impressive results.
