I have become a massive fan of Japanese cuisine. I love sushi and don’t even get me started on tantanmen. I could consume gallons of it. As you can probably imagine, I’m pretty excited about the prospect of the Japan Food Fest taking place over the Easter weekend. What have they got? Over 25 food stands, drinks, vegan options and also some nice cultural stuff and workshops.

To my shame, when I saw that Cape Verdean artist June Freedom was playing at Exil, I actually had to look up the location of Cape Verde on the map. I mean, I knew it was in the Atlantic, but that’s a pretty big place, right? But its exact location, a few hundred kilometres from Senegal, explains the influences in June Freedom’s music. Afrobeat flavours intermingle with R&B sounds and, as he sings in Portuguese and Spanish, there is a healthy dose of Latin in his music. Check him out at Exil as he promotes his 2025 album, Casa Mira Mar.

This April, the weekly Eye Candy comes from an artist who grew up in Lima and has been living in Zurich for quite some time. It’s no surprise that themes like «homeland» and «home» shape her work. Above all, though, she has an eye for the beauty in the mundane and everyday. In the interview, she told me what else influences and inspires her multifaceted art.

The weather can be somewhat changeable in April, so the best-laid plans can be thrown into chaos by the weather gods. To keep you entertained if that day out gets cancelled, I have trawled through trailers and announcements and picked out the best of what the streaming platforms have to offer this month.
