The JazzNoJazz Festival started yesterday, and I’m giving them an extra little plug because the organisers, allblues.ch, are so generous with ticket giveaways throughout the year. Here are my top tips for the festival!

First up, check out the bands playing on the «Discover» stage in Stall 6. I’ve been listening to the soulful sounds of singer Kat Eaton (she’s amazing), as well as New York saxophonist Sam Greenfield (check out his website!). Tickets are reasonably priced at 30 CHF and, as it’s a small venue, you can really get up close to the artists and get moving.

And tonight there’s a free concert in Stall 6. That’s right, free! The Discover stage features the recent ZKB Jazz Prize winner, Ace Ross. The show starts at 9pm.

There are also a few last tickets available for the Mike Stern Band, super-funky bass goddess Kinga Glyk, Maya Delilah, and even the Stereo MC’s if you’re quick. Get involved and get groovin’.

Can you feel the snow coming? The ski season isn’t far away, and if you need to upgrade your equipment or even start from scratch, there are far worse places to visit than the Skibörse, which pops up regularly in Zurich. What do they have? Boards, boots, bindings, goggles… you name it, they’ll have it, both new and pre-ridden. (Yes, that’s a euphemism for second-hand.) The sale takes place from Monday to Friday, so you’ve got a window to get your new setup sorted before the season begins.

Okay, this time i completely overdid it. At first, i just put together a few concerts, but then a kind of crazy enthusiasm took over – i wanted to find every single concert, write them all down, and the list just kept growing. It was quite a lot of work. And the crazy thing is: I know i still haven’t been able to capture every single gig.

Two things are certain, though. First, November is definitely a great month for live music. Second, Zurich really has an incredible musical scene.

The skies are grey, the wind is blowing like a witch’s breath from the north, heavy with snow and rain, and in the city’s cosy Stüblis, pots of cheese are bubbling away, ready to raise your core temperature to about a billion degrees. For me, there’s no better feeling than stepping in from the cold and knowing a sociable, cheese-filled evening lies ahead. Here are some of my favourite places to visit for fondue this season.
