Monday: A Week Of Snow Art In Berner Oberland

What better way to focus on the issues facing out planet than a bunch of billionaires and politicians flying in by private jet to spend the week carousing in a ski resort whilst being lobbied by businesses that would sell their very souls for a profit? Well Das Andere Davos think they may have a better idea as they are hosting their counter-event at the Volkshaus this weekend. Out goes AI firms, big pharma and big oil and in comes activism, feminism and solidarity.

This Monday, the European Outdoor Film Tour returns to the Volkshaus with six short films exploring extreme sports and the outdoor world. The film that really piques my interest is Freja’s Back, which explores climber Freja Shannon’s remarkable comeback from a serious fall that resulted in a broken back. There is also a fascinating 50-day trip around Alaska in Wild Days and, for local interest, two films that explore cycling and ski/paragliding.

One more trip around the sun and the world’s best snowboarders convene in Laax to show off their chops. And do they have chops? Yes, they do. Bigly. The LAAX Open kicks off this week, and the whole event is guaranteed to leave you drooling in awe. The halfpipe is simply unbelievable, as is the slopestyle competition. The riders really do have nerves of steel.

But that is not all. The resort is hosting all kinds of other events, including films, DJs and live music, over the course of the weekend. It’s a great vibe.

Now, I can’t be there (drat!), but all is not lost. The finals will be live-streamed, so I can watch them from the comfort of whatever secret location I’ll be watching from.

New year, new me appears to apply to Zurich’s clubs too. Gonzo has been given a thoughtful makeover. Austrian tape artist Valentin Alfery, known as tapetypo, has transformed doors, walls and floors with strips of coloured tape, creating a site specific artwork that feels surprisingly refined rather than makeshift.

In the stairwell, Pac Man makes an appearance, alongside the title of the piece, «Think outside the multiverse». It works. And it is just enough to persuade my currently rather party shy self to pay the Langstrasse club another visit.
