Okay, this tip is about something that's a little bit out of town, but it's still great fun. In the village of Mettmenstetten — about a half-hour train journey from HB — there’s an extraordinary facility called Jumpin for practising ski jumping. Three enormous kickers launch skiers up to 5 metres into the air, where they perform backflips, front flips — in fact, they're in the air for so long they could probably do their tax return up there — before landing in a pool. Hence, Jumpin.

This Saturday, there's a chance to watch some of their mad skills as they host their Freestyle Night, with skiers, snowboarders and BMX riders showing off their chops. And with live music and DJs, a grill and a bar, it’s a fun way to spend the day. Bonkers — but in a good way!

It’s ironic that the members of One Direction would eventually all go off in completely different directions but one of those vectors has taken former member, Louis Tomlinson, to Zurich this Friday. Louis has released two albums in Walls (2020) and Faith in the Future (2022)post 1D, finding a more rocky, brit pop edge to his sound. For all the Directioners out there grab a ticket to ZOA City and enjoy Louis’s new sound.

I have many fond memories of the kiosk at Josefwiese. I marvelled at the Zirkus Chnopf there, dashed through the fountain with my goddaughter, and enjoyed more than a few beers at sunset. For me, the kiosk was always more than just a place to buy things: it was a meeting point, a stage, a playground, and a living room under the open sky.

So it was heartbreaking to hear the news that, on the 20th June, a carelessly discarded single use barbecue started a fire at the kiosk, gutting the building and destroying the roof. The beating heart of the neighbourhood was severely damaged. But: the Kiosk Josefwiese association is not giving up. The property belongs to the City of Zurich, and the material damage is covered by insurance.

To keep the spirit of the place alive – with spontaneous concerts, children’s events, and neighbourhood gatherings – donations are now being collected through their website. The aim is to set up temporary structures and continue the socio-cultural programme.

Ron's Tip: the kiosk’s Instagram channel will keep you updated on what’s still happening despite the closure. Just recently, an alphorn player performed on the green – just like that, to show support. Lovely, isn’t it?
