This week I’ve been a bit unwell and, apart from writing the newsletter from bed (yes, I know, you don’t want to get a mental picture of it), it gave me a little more time to browse the internet. Did you know that yesterday was «Smart Is Cool Day»? That’s right, a day that, and I quote directly, warts and all, from the website, «defends the idea that being intelligent doesn't mean someone is looser».
Apart from the missing a and the hilarious misspelling of loser, this opened a Pandora’s box of questions, the most obvious to my mind being: if today is Smart Is Cool Day, then is stupid cool for the rest of the year? I then looked at the news and social media and realised that yes, yes it is. Anyhoo, as you’re reading this newsletter, I’m sure you agree with me: being smart is cool! Every. Single. Day.

From Wednesday onwards, Gessnerallee is the place to be, as it hosts this year’s JazzNoJazz Festival. Running from Wednesday, 29 October to 1 November, the festival celebrates the groovier, more accessible side of jazz. Think rhythm, soul and plenty of good energy.
It all kicks off with the legendary Dee Dee Bridgewater, followed by an impressive line-up that includes Stereo MC’s, Afrobeat collective Kokoroko, and bass and guitar icons Marcus Miller and Mike Stern.

A bread festival? Rye not? This Saturday, Zurich rises to the occasion with the 1st Zurich Bread Festival, a festival that’s toastally awesome. Wander the artisan market, where bakeries like Buchmann, bread.love, and Sørenbrød will make you fall in loaf at first sight. From sourdough to spelt, every creation is a breadwinner.
But they can also teach you to bake your own bread. It’s the yeast they can do, after all. Check out the workshops available. Whether you bake for your own sake or earn a crust with baking, it’s sure to be bun-believably interesting. I pita the fool who doesn’t make it down there.
