It’s Thursday night, close enough to the weekend to let life flow, so let’s check out a live gig. Tonight, the Manchester-based, Mercury Prize-nominated band GoGo Penguin hits the stage at Kaufleuten, blending classical music with electronic elements and creating a sound that channels Aphex Twin, Massive Attack, Shostakovich and Debussy, all at the same time.

I honestly thought Valentine’s Day was a holiday invented by an evil cabal of card makers, florists, racy underwear manufacturers and chocolatiers. But the story of Valentine’s Day starts, like so many of Europe’s important holidays, with someone being brutally executed, namely Valentine himself.

Rather than impaling someone with a sword or crucifying them, however, the Dolder is offering a far more gentle Valentine celebration: gliding around the ice rink, followed by a Gstaad Fondue experience in one of their cosy gondolas. I’m sure the hapless St Valentine would agree that it’s much nicer than having a spear inserted where the sun doesn’t shine.

Since the 2nd of February, the city has a new spot for ramen lovers – RIKI RAMEN BĀ at Stauffacher.

Four friends, one mission: to serve truly good Japanese soul food. Fresh noodles, homemade broths and carefully chosen toppings. You can tell everything is made with love. For those who want a full experience, start with Japanese tapas, enjoy a warming bowl of ramen, and finish with some Miso Caramel or Affogato. The atmosphere is relaxed, warm and unpretentious – everyone feels welcome here.

And my personal highlight: there are no reservations, which makes the restaurant especially appealing for the spontaneous among us.

Whilst we have «enjoyed» a relatively mild winter in Zürich, the people of Ukraine have been suffering one of the coldest winters in living memory. «Turn the heating up,» you say?
