Simply Soup

The name says it all – this place is all about soup (alright, curries and chillies too, but they count) and that’s exactly how it should be. The motto at Simply Soup is healthy fast food for busy people.

They’re already settled in three locations across the city: Hallwylstrasse, Pelikanstrasse and Kalkbreite. The menu changes every week.

Musti Grill

A good friend of mine, who lives just across from Musti Grill, told me the restaurant is always packed. Although I’ve never been there myself, I now know it’s probably a real hidden gem.

By the way, the restaurant has an Ocakbasi — a traditional charcoal grill where the meat sizzles. But Musti Grill isn’t on this list for that reason; it’s here for its excellent Turkish red lentil soup (Mercimek Çorbası).

Suppelade

I never get bored at Suppenladen. During the week, they offer three different soups at the soup window every day — usually at least one vegan and one meat option. When I drop by, I often grab a dessert as well, which I enjoy during my afternoon slump. Last week, for example, I had a delicious carrot cake.

Si o No

Near to Wiedikon train station, you’ll find one of my favourite take-away soup spots for lunch. At the bar Si O No, you’re treated to a rotating selection of homemade soups. When I haven’t had time to meal prep and don’t have anything packed for lunch, I often pop over to grab a warming soup. With a bowl of soup in my belly, I always have plenty of energy for the afternoon.

Welschland

Directly across from Si O No is the specialty shop Welschland. Here, too, you’ll find delicious daily soups from Suppen & Pedalen. While you’re there, pick up the house fondue mix, La Religieuse — without a doubt one of the best in the city.

Miki und Ikoo

Miki and Ikoo have been at the forefront of the ramen hype in Zurich for years, so they definitely deserve a spot on this list. They’ve been consistently serving up high-quality ramen for a long time. They’re no longer exactly a secret, but they remain a strong recommendation.

The Miki-Ikoo family has grown even further, now including Hikari and Mori. With all the names, I sometimes get a bit mixed up — especially with the different Ooki locations, which really should be on this list too.

Machida Shoten

The appetite for ramen seems to keep growing around here, and in recent years, numerous new restaurants have opened their doors. Most recently, Machida Shoten caused a stir with its first European branch right here in Zurich. A chain, yes, but wow — the soups here are definitely worth trying.

Brasserie Louis

Especially in autumn, pumpkin soup is on everyone’s mind. But the soup scene is much more diverse. How about a gratinéed onion soup with croutons or a bouillabaisse, for example? If you drop by Brasserie Louis, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to France — at least for a little while.

Pho Na

I’ve been a fan of Pho Na on Josefstrasse for years, and it’s great to see it thriving — this summer, they even opened a second location on Schmiedgasse in District 1. At Pho Na, you’ll find not only excellent pho but also other incredibly tasty Vietnamese soups and dishes. You can also find more delicious pho at Pho MaiHang’sPho 50, and Chez Nhan.

La Zoupa

If you prefer to enjoy your soup at home, I recommend the soups from La Zoupa. Their offerings range from minestrone to barley soup to red lentil soup — with such variety, you’re definitely not going to get bored.

You can order online, and the soups are available at various locations across Zurich. Check their website to see which restaurants and grocery stores carry them.

Bonus: Soup as Part of Affordable Menus

Zurich has no shortage of restaurants offering a daily soup. And there are plenty where the soup is automatically included in the daily menu. But I especially want to highlight a few spots in District 5 where you can enjoy a truly tasty and budget-friendly lunch, soup included:

Restaurant Kantine, Neue Hard 10, 8005 Zürich
Kleinwäscherei, Neue Hard 12, 8005 Zürich
Restaurant Viadukt, Viaduktstrasse 69/71, 8005 Zürich
