SINGA Switzerland | How Speed Dating led me to SINGA Switzerland

Impact Hub Zürich is a community of over 800 entrepreneurial people. In this blog we introduce one of them every week and this week Ella Stuart tells the story how she speed-dated her way to SINGA Switzerland: I approach the table in the corner with a dry throat and butterflies swarming wildly in my stomach. Once I take my seat opposite my partner, I have but five minutes to make an impression. Five minutes to convince them that I’m worth a second date...My first ever try at speed-dating took place on a balmy Monday evening at Auer&Co, Impact Hub Colab in spring 2017. Contrary to most speed dates, however, the purpose of this one was not to spark a romantic partnership, but a relationship of a different kind. My date? Mirjam Walser and Seraina Soldner, co-founders of SINGA Switzerland and my employers to be.This unconventional method of meeting my future colleagues was part of the initial matching process of the Summerpreneurship Academy, a creation of Impact Hub Zurich aimed at matching Swiss start-ups with students looking for an out-of-the-ordinary internship experience. And it works! I got the second date and now, almost four months later, I feel like a fully integrated team member of SINGA Switzerland and the learning curve has been exponential. SINGA Switzerland and the SINGA Factory SINGA Switzerland was founded in Zurich December, 2016 and is based in Impact Hub Zurich. Our mission is to bring together people from a refugee and migrant background with locals to engage in collaborative social, cultural and entrepreneurial projects. SINGA Switzerland’s flagship programme is the SINGA Factory, a six month start-up programme for people from refugee and migrant backgrounds who want to start their own tech-business in Switzerland. Throughout these six months, the participants, our so called SINGApreneurs, profit from a wide variety of workshops based on founding a business e.g. legal aspects, business modelling, financial planning, pitch training, one-to-one mentoring and access to expert coaches, mentors, partners and investors. Special mention here goes to Engagement Migros, without whose support the SINGA Factory would not be possible. Dare to get involved, dare to communicate.Despite having joined as a Summerpreneur, Mirjam and Seraina treated me like a full team member from the start. I have therefore been able to learn and practise the “why, how and what” of SINGA first-hand and can contribute more to the team than a stereotypical intern scanning documents and making coffee runs. My main learnings from this experience would be, as a newcomer to a team, communicate your and your start-up’s expectations openly and often, learn as much as you can about and get involved in all aspects of the business. To the start-ups, create space for expectations to be discussed, regardless of whether the intern is with you for six weeks or six months, and don’t be afraid to throw them in at the deep end. More often than not interns or newcomers are indeed capable of the varied workload and will relish it, and you as a start-up will have not only an eager intern at your side, but a motivated new team-member. Call to ActionThe SINGA Factory starts its first cycle Monday 18th September and we are always happy to hear from coaches, mentors, investors and media interested in learning more about our SINGApreneurs and their projects. The SINGA Sprachcafé – a German language meet-up happening every Monday evening at 5pm at Café Auer from 25th September, also needs motivated German speakers to help the learning community and us with organisational support. In the years since then she has taught English, obtained a Master’s degree in political studies and fallen in love with the Swiss mountains, traditions and cheese, oh the cheese. More recently, she joined the SINGA Switzerland team as Project Officer for the SINGA Factory and can be found at Impact Hub Colab in Zurich. Ella is originally from Auckland, New Zealand and carries with her a deep love for nature, language and a curiosity for learning._________Wanna get more Info about what we do? Sign up for the Impact Hub Zürich Newsletter to get the newest blog posts directly into your mailbox and to stay in touch with what’s going on in our community.
