Godspeed You! Black Emperor /Support: Mathieu Ball
Nur wenige andere Musikgruppen der heutigen Zeit haben sich dem Wunsch nach Verortung, nach Form durch Wort oder Bild so konsequent entzogen wie Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Eine Handvoll Interviews haben sie bisher gegeben, alle im Kollektiv verfasst, die Wortmeldung als dezidiert anti-Individuelles - wie eigentlich alles an der Band, als Akt des maximal Gemeinsamen natürlich die Musik.
Seit den Neunzigern und zu Beginn der Nullerjahre, in denen Alben wie F♯ A♯ ∞ (1997) oder Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven (2000) als einschlägige Werke des für die Band typischen instrumentalen «chamber rock» gefeiert wurden, geistert Godspeed als grosses, fast monumentales und dennoch sehr unbekanntes Gestirn in der Musikwelt umher, auf keiner bestimmbaren Bahn.
Und nun wird ein neues Album in den Raum katapultiert. No Title as of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead erscheint Anfang Oktober. Protestmusik in Zeiten, die sie brauchen.
Mathieu Ball
Der kanadische Gitarrist Mathieu Ball, auch bekannt vom heavy music Trio Big|Brave, arbeitet seit Jahren auch als Solokünstler mit Gitarre, spielt mit Rückkopplung, an- und abflauenden, donnernden, knisternden Klängen. Reibung, Metall, Schall und Nachhall. Auf Ampilified Guitar (2022, aufgenommen von Efrim Manuel Menuck von Godspeed You! Black Emperor) folgte dieses Jahr Amplified Guitar II und dürfte jedes der Dröhnemusik zugewandte Herz erfreuen.
