Metropolitan mix

This week, Zurich is all about fashion and design. Metropolitan Mixer starts the week with a fashion show of the winter collections by German designer Manikó and Swiss design duo Beige at Blumenhalle. The show comes with various freebies: Welcome drinks, head and neck massages, beauty consultations and fitness tips.
Thursday 7.30 pm, Blumenhalle

Window with a view

Real Fiction Cinema is a temporary art installation by Job Koelewijn. Instead of a screen you face a window through which you look out. The content of the “film” is the view of the outside as well as everything that happens during the „screening”. I’m curious if the soundtrack of the cinematic history really changes my perspective of the view, which is familiar to me. You can go and try it yourself either at Landesmuseum, Turbinenplatz or Rote Fabrik free of charge until 16 December.
Thursday 10 am to 7 pm, Landesmuseum, Turbinenplatz, Rote Fabrik

All about design

Friday is the opening day for design. Stall 6 presents various Swiss designers. Buy your first Christmas presents while enjoying a party with djs, burlesque dancers and live concerts. At the same time, Blickfang opens its doors at Kongresshaus. Here you find international young and established furniture, fashion and accessories designers. If you want to visit both events, you can also head to Blickfang on either Saturday or Sunday. For Blickfang i have three pair of tickets to give away.

Friday 7 pm, Stall 6
Friday/Saturday 11 am to 10 pm, Sunday 11 am to 7 pm, Blickfang

Paradisiacal place

Last week, the Plaza club opened its doors. I have to say it’s one of the most beautiful clubs I’ve ever seen - even though I’ll miss the cinema that used to be at this venue. But now I can reminisce about all the films I’ve seen here amongst paradise birds downstairs or in the elegant (smoking) salons upstairs. This Saturday, Danish singer/songwriter Agnes Obel is playing there supported by N* Grandjean.
Saturday 7 pm, Plaza

Make that five

Not only design but also the Danish are omnipresent this weekend. The shop Making Things is turning five and celebrates on Saturday with sushi, beer, an installation by the Danish (!) label Libertine-Libertine – and a ten per cent discount on the current collection. The shop closes at 11 pm to give you time to head over to Zukunft, where the official anniversary party is taking place.
Saturday 7 pm, Making Things / Saturday 11 pm, Zukunft

Californian literature

This Monday, American author Maile Meloy comes to Switzerland for the first time to read from her novel A Family Daughter at Literaturhaus.  You might also know her previous novel Liars and Saints the reading of which will be altered dramatically by her second work, according to the NY times, who picked A Family Daughter as one of the top ten books of 2009.
Monday 8 pm, Literaturhaus

Good to know

The days are getting shorter and darker; temperatures are dropping. This might make you miss summer, but I’m also looking forward to taking out my skis. I’m not the only one who’s waiting. Depending on when it starts snowing – so that the snow actually stays on the ground – the ski areas will open the lifts. They’re all set to go. Until then you’ll have to head to the areas which have a glacier, such as Laax. Schweizer Familie ran a nice overview  of the slopes last week. Here you’ll find lists of slopes that are diverse (die Vielfältigen), steep (die Steilen) or relaxed (die Gemütlichen). Break a leg!

Eating

Jade restaurant and club has just launched a new dining experience called Blue Marlin: Cafe Del Mar style in attitude, music and ambience, with gourmet food served on large platters to be shared by everyone at the table – quite a novel concept for Zurich. The menu features generous salads, organic beef and a variety of fresh fish and spicy seafood. Dinners take place every Thursday evening. I have a voucher for a dinner for two, including a bottle of house wine, at Blue Marlin to give away.

Thursday 6 pm, Jade

Shopping

Bits&Bobs, a shop with gadgets, accessories and fashion opens its doors this Thursday at Zurlindenstrasse 230. So more design-based shopping as promised earlier on. And I’m not done yet. Shuala Concept Store – also presenting various design pieces – turns five and celebrates this on Thursday.

Rons favourite song

The new song I Love you by Cassius is a treat for the ears and there is a cool video with singing iPhone mouths. You can download this app for free and the guys in Paris challenge you to create your own videos with it. Some have already answered the call and on Dailymotion you’ll find quite a collection.
