Open the bagatelle

Bagatelle is a new bar opening right in the heart of Kreis 4. The place looks very sumptuous and is spread over two floors. With candle lit corners and paintings hanging on the wall it’s clear they are aiming for something a little more exotic than usual. They promise wonderful drinks, fine appetizers and music to enjoy if you’re in the mood for after work drinks or a full on club night. The opening night is tonight and I’ll be there to welcome them to the neighbourhood.
Thursday 5 pm, Bagatelle

Murder on the dance floor

Killer Parties have been bringing the electro crowd happy times in Zürich for the last few years and now they bring us the first Killer Festival at Pfingstweide. The idea is to bring the live music more to the fore, but still keep the electro dj core they are known for.  Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs are the UK live headliners who, despite their cute/silly name, serve up cutting-edge bleeps and beats that have summer shining through them. Filthy Dukes, fresh from Fabric, London and The Stereo Youth are just a couple of the other highlights on the line up.
Friday 10.30 pm, Pfingstweide

A chance to dance

If you’ve ever wanted to tango whilst buying a mango or maybe foxtrot with a job lot of pork chops (I’ll stop now), then Tanzfest could be your opportunity. This dance festival is happening across the weekend in 25 cities in Switzerland, and brings dance performance out of the theatre and into public spaces. In Zurich performances are happening on Saturday afternoon at the Migros stores in Limmatplatz and Stadelhofen. There are also a number of other events in town, as well as across Switzerland, but none of them allow me to rhyme dances with food, so you’ll find full details here.
Saturday 11 am, Migros Limmatplatz and Stadelhofen

Walk on the Ron-side

If you’ve ever wondered why Kreis 4 and 5 are so close to my heart, or would just like to discover some more about the area, this weekend there is another Kreislauf 4+5 organised to showcase some of the best the neighbourhood has to offer. On both Saturday and Sunday over 90 shops and studios are open for you to browse, shop or just chat with the owners and designers. The meeting point is the Architekturforum where you can pick up a guidebook, have some snacks or even arrange a guided tour, for that personal touch.
Saturday and Sunday 11 am, Kreis 4 and 5

Cool birthday

At the height of rave culture in the mid-90’s, Cool Monday was born in Mascotte. Rather than following the trend they looked to classic jazz, funk and soul as their musical template and now, this cool Monday, they are celebrating their 17th birthday. Holy Ghost have been booked to play live, bringing their LCD Soundsystem-esque music all the way from NYC, and with support by djs Jewl, Gallo and Muri this should be a birthday worth remembering. And in a reverse to normal birthday protocol, they are giving you the gift of free entry on the night.
Monday 10 pm, Mascotte

Metronomy and you

Since I named The Look as my new favourite song a couple of weeks ago, Metronomy have decided to play a live show in Abart. Now, that may not be exactly the sequence of events but let’s all pretend it was. Metronomy are a four piece from Brighton, UK who mix their electro-pop sound with real charm and danceable vibes. I have 2x2 tickets to give away. If you go and sing all the lyrics to The Look, just let them know Ron told you to. E-mail me.
Tuesday 8 pm, Abart

Good to know

This Sunday, Max Frisch would become 100 years old. He is one of Switzerland’s most renowned playwrights and authors. Many of his pieces were adapted in English as well: Homo Faber, I’m not Stiller, Firebugs, Andorra, just to name a few. If you grew up in Switzerland you didn’t get around him. And his critical opinions of post World War II Europe shaped many young minds. He was born in Zurich and lived here most of his live. In town you still find a few traces of him, the house where he was born (Heliostrasse 31) is still there, as well as the swimming pool Letzigraben, which he designed (he was an architect before he became a writer). A beautiful spot. So when the sun comes back, get one of his texts, head to the pool and enjoy his legacy. There are also some current projects that remember him. At Dienerstrasse 33 a new take away opened its doors a few weeks ago offering a large selection of toasties, salads and soups. And it’s called Max Frisch. Why? Let me know if you find out. Being inspired by Max Frisch`s work, life and personality, visual artist Elena Habicher organises a birthday bash in his honour on Saturday at Revier.
Saturday 10 pm, Revier

Amongst friends

“With us, you’ll forget the time” is the motto of the newly opened Des Amis at Nordstrasse 88. And it’s true. On the – at present still – sunny terrace you sit, eat, chat and drink until it’s way past your lunch time. The café offers seasonal and freshly prepared menus for lunch. In the evening the selection for food becomes smaller but who needs food if there is a large choice of drinks available? I’ll be back at the weekend when they serve breakfast until 4 pm, which means I can really forget the time.

Fashion victims

At the Freischützgasse the pop up store Klinik, well, pops up for two months. Here you find vintage and retro fashion. You can buy or sell your own things for a commission. There’s music every evening and the opening party is today. But there is more fashion for you this week at Kreis 4. Missfashion at Kernstrasse 31 was renamed into Tatort-Boutique and celebrates this with a provocative (so I’m told) fashion show all afternoon by Decocoon and, of course, some prosecco.
Thursday 8 pm, Klinik
Saturday 3 pm, Tatort

The Original Hipsters

Dads Are The Original Hipsters is a photo blog dedicated to photos of our parents' generation when they were our age. It's interesting to see how similar their style was compared to the one of today's hipsters. Go to blog
