Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 29.9.2011: Birthdays, club opening & social eating

Dear friends,
As I mentioned last week, the Zurich Film Festival has been in town and is due to end on Sunday. They’ve had some fantastic premiers and it’s been a great week for any film buffs out there, me included. As a parting gift, I’ve managed to get 2 x 2 tickets for Friday to see the documentary, Call it a balance in the unbalance, a portrait of avant-garde fashion designer Miguel Adrover. Contact me if you’d like a chance to go.
Give my love to the city, Ron

Expat party

The fact that you’re receiving my newsletter can only mean two things: you’re an extremely cool person with exquisite taste and you’re an expat. If you’d like to mix it up a little with some other expats there is an Expat After Work Party at Exil tonight. Organised by InterNations, they have a line up of 3 bands, a street-art performance, food and, of course, drinks. I can’t promise the other people will be as cool as you but if you mention where you heard about the party, you can try to Ronify them.
Thursday 6 pm, Exil
See the light

Journey through Zurich with new eyes as Krishnendu Kocheril shows his digital photographs of our town at his new exhibition, The Audio-Visual Zurich Experience, at Planet 5. Taken mostly at dusk or night and using long exposure or even camera wobbles to his advantage, these photos show our town in beautiful and dramatic new ways. The visuals are enhanced by soundscapes created by Zeno Schuler.
Friday 6 pm, Planet 5
Birthday bonanza

As new venues and party nights open in Zurich, I like to keep a watchful eye on them to make sure they are doing ok, just like a clubbing shepherd over his disco flock. So it makes me proud to announce that a couple of these have reached some special anniversaries and will be celebrating accordingly. Frieda’s Büxe have their first birthday this Friday, and mark the occasion with a night of great djs. Then Hafenkneipe reaches its 5-year anniversary, held at Abart, with Enter Shikari playing live followed by a hard-rocking party.
Friday 8 pm, Hafenkneipe at Abart
Friday 11 pm, Frieda’s Büxe
Canadian rockies and roll

City and Colour is basically one-man-acoustic-band Dallas Green (city and colour, get it?), but if you like your vocals to be honey-soaked and your music to be intimate and heartbreaking then this is for you. He’s already released 3 albums and has become pretty well known in his native Canada with a growing reputation elsewhere. He now plays for the first, and only, time in Switzerland at Abart.
Saturday 8 pm, Abart

New kid on the blok

Whilst some clubs celebrate their birthdays above, others are just being born. Blok has its grand opening this Saturday. If you’re looking for a new dance floor and the electro sounds to get you on it, then Blok’s where you’ll want to be. For the opening night they have djs David Evangelos, Kapara, Jimi Jules, The Kids are Terrorists and Ryan Riot taking you from disco to indie-electro to dubstep. Vjs Bildstörung will be providing visuals.
Saturday 12 am, Blok, Schiffbaustrasse 3 8005
Music to change the world

What’s the first thing to come to mind when I say Bob Geldof? Live Aid? Africa? Knighthood? Loud mouth? Well it may shock some people to know that Bob Geldof is actually a pop star, and a pretty fine one at that. From the Boomtown Rats in the 70’s to his later solo work, even throughout his world changing charitable work, he’s had the guitar by his side. He’s recently released a new album and he’s playing live at Kaufleuten next Tuesday. Forget Saint Bob for one night and go see the man play a little of the devils music instead.
Tuesday 8 pm, Kaufleuten
Shared good

Zum Bunten Tisch is a gastronomy project that includes mentally handicapped waiters and waitresses. Previously, you booked a place and were seated with everyone who came that night on a long shared table. After the closure of their first place at Hallwylerhof, they had to find a new venue for their monthly events. They found a new partner at SAHltimbocca near Bucheggplatz. What’s also new – you can choose if you want to book your meal at the shared or at an individual table. Book ahead and you’re in for a familiar set up with great food and if you wish, new company. The premiere at the new locale takes place on 1 October.
Zum Bunten Tisch at SAHLtimbocca, Lägernstrasse 37, 8037
What is that?

In the spirit of Film Festival week, this web quiz asks you to identify classic movies from famous objects. Some of the clues are harder than others but once the answers are revealed, you’ll be kicking yourself that you didn’t get it. Try it.
