New art

If you’re a fan of contemporary art then get ready for a treasure trove of delights to explore over the next few days. The 13th International Art Fair is in town from today until Sunday and will showcase sculpture, photography, video and painting from around the world including the gallery, Art Savour, who are based in Zurich and have many Swiss artists on show. You may not be able to afford everything you would like but you can at least stroke your chin and look as if you’re considering a purchase.
Thursday to Sunday 11am to 8 pm, Kongresshaus
Thug who?

It’s only been open for 2 weeks itself but this Friday Blok hosts the release party for a new record label, Baldachin. To show what they hope the label will stand for and also that they mean business, the Baldachin guys have brought in dj super-duo Thugfucker to mark the occasion, and if the stunning past releases and club friendly beats of Thugfucker are any guide, then Baldachin should do fine.
Friday 11 pm, Blok
Rebel music

Growing up as nomads and rebel fighters, the members of Tinariwen originally formed in the exiled Tuareg fighter camps of the Sahara desert, playing radical protest music for their communities. So if you prefer your rock n rollers to be tough, these guys fit the bill. Their music is both familiar and exotic, conjuring up the endlessness of a desert sky or the spirit jinn that are said to haunt the sands. They sing in a language that cannot be understood but the meaning is still clear. They bring their wandering caravan to Kaufleuten this Saturday.
Saturday 8 pm, Kaufleuten
Dynamic duo

Captain Moustache and Fredo Ignazio may sound like a dubious super hero duo looking for a bumbling villain to defeat but in fact they are a Swiss band from Glaris who will rock their hearts out at Helsinki Klub with a combination of experimental rock, grunge and disco. Are they loud? Yes. Are they chaos in motion? Yes. Will you have a damn good time jumping around to their noise? Hell, yes. Go see the Captain and Fredo before they explode in a cloud of sound.
Saturday 8 pm, Helsinki Klub
Personal postcards

Send a picture of Zurich to the click 2011 team and they’ll turn it into a postcard. All submitted postcards will be displayed from 17-21 October at the University of Zurich at the postcard kiosk. There you can buy your favourite card (your own for example) or have a look at the competition. And don’t forget – also upload your copy of the photo to my website (Zurich photo trip) so I can publish it in the newsletter.
17-21 October, Lichthof University of Zurich
Fight for your rights!

Revolution is the current topic for the movie-cycle of Filmstelle, where you can watch a celluloid gem each Tuesday for 5 francs. Paradise Now is the film screened this Tuesday – a poetic, moving film about the struggle for Freedom set in Tel Aviv.

Good to know

The Swiss seem obsessed with sausages during the autumn, when you’ll find the podgy delicacies on almost every restaurant menu. A traditional Swiss sausage platter is called a ‘Metzgete’ in the German region reflecting the seasonal custom of butchering non-essential animals before winter set in. Animal parts which couldn’t be conserved with salt or smoke had to be used immediately and were often turned into blood and liver sausages. Nowadays, fresh sausages (without chemical additives) are still enjoyed. Boiled in water, they’re typically served with sweet apple slices and sauerkraut on the side. And here my three favourites to enjoy a Metzgete. Gartenhof: 17-29 October, Köchlistube: 26-28 October and 30 Nov – 2 December, Caduff’s Wine Loft: 8-12 November. Make sure you book ahead!
For a better world

2011 has been the year of revolutions and riots: Tunisia, Egypt, Spain, Greece and finally USA. The currently ongoing demonstration at Wall Street shows that many people are unhappy with the system and the government. The network 15th October put the movements together for a short, vivid film. If you want to show your solidarity, there is an event taking place this Saturday at Paradeplatz from 10 am.
