Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 27.10.2011: Soul man, pop pirates & a friday feast

Opps, I did it again
I told you last week about an art exhibition at Hive, which is actually taking place today. If such mistakes happen, I usually try to fix them as soon as possible, letting you know on my facebook page. So join me there.
Give my love to the city, Ron

Real soul

When singers attempt a retro-soul sound they often focus more on the retro and lose sight of the soul, but for Charles Bradley there is nothing but the soul. At 62 he finally released his debut album this year and a lifetime of setbacks, missed opportunities but ultimately hope seems to inform every note he sings. He plays as part of the 4-day Jazznojazz festival , which began yesterday and runs until Sunday, and is a great chance to hear one of the great soul voices in action.
Wednesday to Sunday, jazznojazz Festival
Saturday 10.30 pm, ewz-Unterwerk Selnau

Art vitrine

The curators of Die Diele pass on the reigns to the artists during the exhibition cycle Mesh Voltage, taking place at two shop windows at Kreis 4. They chose a busy area, so the art can be seen by everyone. Currently Sarah Margnetti , nominated by her forerunner, displays her work Sunny Side Up in both windows, starting this Thursday.
Thursday 6 pm to 1 am, Die Diele, Sihlhallenstrasse 4

Religious raving

You may think of God as a church going type of guy (or girl) but it seems s/he also likes to frequent a club when the mood strikes. This Friday at Gonzo is the Pray to Dance night, and whether you’re a soul-sinner, disco-devil or rocking-angel you’ll find some holy inspiration. The vinyl vicars include Simon Bandanna and Liquid Silk and you’ll also get a chance to take part in a live interactive confessional.
Friday 11 pm, Gonzo Club

Friday feast

The team around mastermind Valefritz dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to alternative eating culture. Each Friday, they cook a beautiful six course dinner at Daikini’s . This week the menu consists of with lamb served with mango and vanilla risotto served with char amongst four more courses. If you like to spoil your palate and enjoy an easy-going atmosphere, then you’re right here.
Fridays from 6 pm, Daikini's

Ghostly grunge

It’s the Halloween weekend coming up and if you want to keep the ghosts happy you have to make some noise. To help me stay safe this year the nice people at X-tra have put on the Rattle ‘n’ Roll Halloween Special. On Saturday you can hear Mad Sin , a zombie, punk rockabilly band and The Staggers, a 60’s surf trash band making all kinds of noise. There’ll also be a burlesque show and a competition for the scariest dressed (entry is cheaper with costume). On Sunday, for The Party Ain’t Over night, the queen of rockabilly, Wanda Jackson plays new tracks from her new Jack White produced album.
Saturday 9 pm, X-tra
Sunday 7.45 pm, X-tra

A thousand leaves

Alela Diane Menig is first of all an American singer songwriter with a nice, warm voice. The songs aren’t too complicated but her pieces are powerful. I like how she switches easily into her head voice – and wish she’d taught this to the singer of The Cranberries. Often she’s accompanied by an acoustic guitar or some percussion. But generally it’s music with little fuss and I look forward to a concert at Rote Fabrik that warms my heart and soul.
Sunday 8.30 pm, Rote Fabrik, Clubraum

Pirate radio

Pete and the Pirates have been around the UK for a couple of years now but have never broken through to any great success, this may be more to do with their pantomime name rather than the music. If you like your indie-rock bands to have guitars that jangle, drums that move your feet and lyrics that tell a story then set sail with the pirates at Mascotte. Who knows what treasures you’ll find.
Wednesday 7.30 pm, Mascotte

Good to know

Last weekend, we Swissies elected our parliament. However, in the canton of Zurich, the seats in the Ständerat (similar to the Senate in the US) remain empty. None of the candidates reached the amount of votes they would have needed. So they go into a second round which will take place at the end of November. This gives the citizens of Zurich a bit of time to dwell on who to vote for. The remaining candidates are the two current ones (Verena Diener and Felix Gutzwiler) as well as former Bundesrat Christoph Blocher. Two of the three will get elected. What does it mean for you? Probably that you’ll keep seeing a lot of smiling heads on the advertising boards for the next few weeks.

Ron’s favourite song
It sounds like it should have been released in the middle of summer but Midnight City by M83 is enough to keep me warm as winter creeps in. Enjoy.
