Taking stock

In search for presents?  Or in the mood to treat yourself? Kalbreitestrasse 59 hosts the pop up store Designer Stock from 1st to 23rd December (open Wednesday-Friday: 12 to 7 pm, Saturday: 12 to 5 pm), which sells fashion and accessories by various local designers. It's a bit like these markets where you find them all in one place. IIf you like to have a look around with a glass of wine in your hand – join the opening this Thursday.
Thursday 4-8 pm, Designer Stock
Radio Rundfunk

Rundfunk.fm return with a month of nightly sessions transmitted directly to your radio and Internet. From 11 pm each night of December, they have a line up of excellent Swiss and international djs and musicians broadcasting the very finest tracks to compliment whatever your nocturnal activities may be. All music is beamed across the city from the heights of Schloss Sihlberg where, for 4 nights, they will also open their doors and you can party as the broadcasts are made. I have 2 x 2 tickets to give away for Friday. E-mail me.
From Friday 11pm, Schloss Sihlberg and Radio 1 (93.6)

Special night

Spezialmaterial Records are a Zurich based collective built around their love of electronic music. Since the late 90s, this group of producers, djs, promoters and musicians have become central in the electro scene in Switzerland and internationally. This Saturday they come out in full force with the Spezialmaterial Labelthrill night at Exil. 6 live acts and a multitude of djs will leave you in no doubt what the label has to offer.
Saturday 10 pm, Exil

Mariachi mayhem

So what do you do if you’re a hardcore punk band and feel the need to spice things up a little? You start playing mariachi music, of course! Mariachi El Bronx were an LA based punk band call The Bronx until they adopted their new name as well as full-on black charro outfits. So if you’re looking for a party filled with tequila, dancing and a horn section that rocks, be at Hafenkneipe this Sunday. I’ve seen them play live once before and I promise this will be a party not to be missed. Arriba!
Sunday 8 pm, Hafenkneipe

Entertaining massacre

I find Karaoke from Hell very entertaining. But I certainly missed many shows.  To fill such gaps there is a book available now: Karaoke From Hell Live at Mascotte. More than 140 singers are portrayed within the photo-tome (370 pages). The collection is released on Tuesday combined with the beloved vinyl massacre. So you might even end up with a book as well as some LPs.
Tuesday, Mascotte 9.30 pm
Classic treat

Do you like classic music but the concerts are always a bit too expensive for you? Well, if you're under 25 or a student there are various concerts at Tonhalle which you can visit for 10 Francs, such as the concert this Wednesday by Zurich's chamber orchestra, playing Mozart. You can book the tickets always from the Monday two weeks prior to the concert. You find the programme until June 2012 here
Wednesday 7.30 pm, Tonhalle

Eating: Bar Basso

Slightly hidden but very central just next to City Hallenbad lies Bar Basso, though restaurant would be more appropriate when I think about it. The younger sister of the renowned Rosso spoils its guests with - surprise, surprise - pizza. But you'll also find seasonal dishes and changing daily specialties on the menu. Le gourmet Ron vous souhaite bon appétit!
Bar Basso, Sihlstrasse 59
Good to know

At once, they were everywhere - Cupcakes! I don't recall when cupcakes arrived in Zurich but I remember a time - well most of my life really - when that wasn't the case. But over the last two years, shops and services popped up all around the city. So if you're looking for a sweet bring-along or if cupcakes are part of your festive ritual, here are four top addresses within the city. Oh sweetest thing: This service by Fräulein Meier - only a few selected are on first name terms - specialises in customized orders. So the right address for personalized cupcakes. Cupcake affair: Melanie Studer opened her cupcake shop one year ago at Niederdorf. There you find various flavours freshly baked every day. Michelle's Cupcakes: Michelle loves cupcakes and if you do too, you can order them online - mini or normal size - and choose between six different tastes. The vermicelles cupcake intrigues me. Jolie et Calorie: The confectionary at Rennweg specialises in cupcakes with a French touch. Très jolie!
Handmade

In a world where we’re told fulfilment is just a purchase away and self-help books detail labyrinthine ways to reach our happy place, it can take a simple story built around a simple object to cut away the nonsense and reveal an obvious truth. In this video about knife maker Joel Bukiewicz, he explains why he does what he does and in doing so reveals a pathway to something resembling happiness. Watch.

Knowledge is power

Correctly answering questions in a quiz always makes me feel good. It proves that all those times I skipped school weren’t as detrimental to my education as Miss Bradshaw told me they would be.  But this feeling is a private victory and, of course, does nothing to benefit the world. The website Freerice changes that. Answer questions from a variety of subjects and for each one you get right, they will donate 10 grains of rice to the World Food Programme. Now I can feel smug and feed the hungry at the same time. Miss Bradshaw would surely be proud.
