Lotus position

He first came to my attention around 2006 with his debut album ‘1983’ and Flying Lotus is still warping the boundaries of what electronic music can be in the 21st Century. If you’re liking the hip-hop experimentation of J Dilla or even the electro-jitters of recent Radiohead albums, then Flying Lotus has got the mind expanding beats for you. He plays at Rote Fabrik tonight.
Thursday 8.30 pm, Rote Fabrik

All the fun of the fair

The Bad Bonn Kilbi (funfair) is a great little music festival that happens out in the boondocks of Bern. So, why am I telling you Zurich Ronsters this? Well, Bad Bonn has teamed up with Exil and Moods to bring their countryside music experience to our urban metropolis. It’s held over 2 days in Exil with a fine line up of bands, singers and djs. Headliners include avant-garde composer Glenn Branca on Friday, playing the Swiss premiere of a new composition and on Saturday, Thurston Moore, main man with Sonic Youth.
Friday and Saturday 6.30 pm, Exil

Rock ‘n’ roller

As ice skating rinks start to pop up all over town with their jingle bells and reminders of Christmas’ past, let’s stop for a moment to consider it’s urban cousin: the roller-disco. If you have an urge to party like it’s 1981 then head down to Supermarket this Friday for the Roller Disco Club. Forget the sporty in-lines and crash helmets, all you really need are your 4-wheeled groove riders (or roller-skates if you prefer, hireable there) and some 80s disco sounds to keep you rolling. Forget what it means to be cool in 2011 and find out how it felt in the 80s.
Friday 10 pm, Supermarket

2 girls, 1 gig

Evelinn Trouble is well named. The Zurich singer’s music sounds like the dark places where bad things happen. As the synths, heavy bass lines and jagged beats all jostle for position, it’s clear that Evelinn’s soaring, powerful voice is the ring master. She plays at Restaurant Viadukt this Saturday, and is supported by another female-fronted, mean and moody band from the States, She Keeps Bees
Saturday 9 pm, Restaurant Viadukt

Chain for change

Unicef organises a real human chain. If you want to show your support against violence towards girls join their project. The goal is that people stand from the Münster-Bridge down to lake on both sides this Saturday.  It’ll take about half an hour and you’ll get coffee and croissants afterwards as a thank you. More about the topic (in German)
Saturday 10.45 am, Helmhaus
Ron‘s cheer up plan

The cold arrived and everyone covers under hats and hoodies. So on Tuesday, let’s make Zurich a brighter place: Look the people around you in the eyes. And a smile doesn’t hurt. And if that doesn’t warm your heart enough, let’s turn Wednesday into a guerrilla deco day. Take ribbons and Christmas decorations with you and embellish what crosses your way. Happy December!
Tuesday & Wednesday, all around town

Key to my stomach

A few weeks back, I took the tram to Seefeld. It was already dark and my goal was an unknown restaurant next to stop Fröhlichstrasse: Schlüssel. A warm welcome invited me in, and after getting a wonderful glass of the suggested wine, I felt at home.  Whenever I’ll want a meal in a friendly, unpretentious, homely environment, I’ll be back. And hope that the Hacktätschli (meatballs with mashed potatoes) are still on the menu, which is small. But in this case, small is better. Only downside, it’s closed Saturday and Sunday.
Schlüssel, Seefeldstrasse 177

Good to know

Finally, winter is arriving and I finally notice all the Maroni stalls. I love these roasted chestnuts: so sweet and warm healthy! As the vendors of each stall often change every season I won’t be able to tell you which sells the best ones. Generally they’re all in all the same, but I can certainly recommend the couple at Albisriederplatz and Ruth at Bucheggplatz. While Maroni are nice as a snack, caramelized chestnuts are probably my favourite side dish, served with venison, which is in season during winter in most restaurants. So enjoy the old chestnut. It’s also supposed to be healthy.

As the dark days of winter wrap their arms tighter around us, Assembly by Elephant sounds like a sunbeam breaking through the clouds. Enjoy.

Museum of Obsolete Objects

As the digital tsunami continues to drown all analogue equipment in its wave of ones and zeros, the Museum of Obsolete Objects has opened its doors online.  Like beachcombers sifting through the wreckage, they have found the most important objects of our recent past and given them a home. In their own quirky way they’ll tell you about such ancient artefacts as the tape cassette and fax machine. They even predict the computer mouse becoming obsolete by 2015.
