Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 22.12.2011: Parties are all around you & a happy New Year

Christmas break - see you in 2012
I'm taking a holiday for a week, so you’ll hear from me next time in 2012. But so you won’t miss me too much, I’ve put together my highlights for every day until the New Year starts. And if you’ll spend the holidays on your own, have a look at the web tips at the bottom
Give my love to the city and a happy New Year, Ron

Money laundering

The Wäscherei is a great multi-media public gallery set in the heart of Kreis 4. As an art association they focus on supporting local projects and artists and get sponsorship from the city, as well as through membership by patrons such as your selves but also through holding in-house events. For tonight they have asked some of their favourite artists to supply a piece of art which will then be auctioned off to the highest bidder. All monies raised will be invested back into Wäscherei. View all items here. Hint: Christmas is coming.
Thursday, 22 Dec, 8 pm, Wäscherei, Dienerstrasse 70, 8004

Ho, ho, hiphop

If you’re living in Zurich and also into the hip-hop/graffiti scene then 14k magazine should be your second read of the week, after my newsletter of course. They are published out of Zurich and detail all local and international hip-hopping occurrences. This Friday they take over Exil, for a pre-Christmas warm-up called aN8b4xMas (a night before xmas), with djs Sterneis and Nail from 6pack Records as well as a triple dj line-up from 14k themselves.
Friday, 23 Dec, 10 pm, Exil

No sleep ‘til Christmas

It’s Christmas Eve, so you have 2 choices – go to bed early with a stocking on the end of your bed, praying that Santa knows you’ve been a good Ronster all year or you can go out partying and hope he doesn’t see you as you slink back home in the early hours. He’s an old man; his eyes aren’t what they used to be - I say take the risk! And Bagatelle has Discothèque Noél to tempt you. A night of disco, house and 80’s hits. How could Santa think badly of you for such innocent fun?
Saturday, 24 Dec, 8 pm, Bagatelle

Again and again

Sunday is generally a day I like to spend in my bed or on the sofa. But this Sunday isn’t just any Sunday, it’s the night before a free Monday. So if you don’t spend it with your family, check out Ursive Mocca X-mas, the annual party by Kalabrese, Lexx, David Evangelos, Yves sans talent and the Diggnsacks. They await you at Pfingstweidstrasse 10 with a musical gift.
Sunday, 25 Dec, 10 pm, Pfingstweidstrasse 10
Left over time
It’s time for a break. So for Monday I suggest staying at home, finishing leftovers and browsing through my old newsletters, writing a Cityscribe article or watching tv.

Reservoir rons

Quentin Tarantino does two things really well – one is make movies, the other is soundtrack those movies. I know I can never cut off someone’s ear without hearing ‘Stuck in the Middle With You’ playing through my mind. The Tarantinos are a band that take the songs from, and inspired by, Tarantino’s movies and rock them out with a live show. Dressed in the dark suit/skinny tie classic combo, these guys bring the wild and cool back to cover bands.

Who made bon homme

Whomadewho are an interesting electro-pop outfit from Denmark whose singer, Tomas Høffding, decided he needed to expand his musical horizons and so has done a solo project under the alter ego, Bon Homme. Whilst the music may not be a million miles away from his band’s original sound, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing if you're looking for a live gig that's also dancefloor friendly. He plays at Zukunft next Wednesday.

Ron's Favourite Song

So it's Thursday and we're nearly finished with all the holiday celebrations and, of course, 2011. Before the big finale and fireworks, take today to relax with my last favourite song of the year - Les Plus Beaux by François and the Atlas Mountains. Enjoy.
Brit rock

If you’re from the UK and in Zurich for the holidays, you may be missing a taste of home. I’m sure the queen’s speech and Christmas crackers seem a long way away, but fear not, as musically you can dip yourself into the invigorating nectar of the Britpack night at Abart. An evening dedicated to the vibrating monolith that is British rock. From The Who to Muse, Led Zepplin to Oasis - all your homesick blues will be blown away in a blast of guitar thrashing.
Friday, 30 Dec, 10 pm, Abart

Happy New Year

Tonight, there is something on in every club in town, but the Silvestertanz at Weisser Wind caught my eye. The organizers want to celebrate the New Year in the glamorous 20s style with a boom, which doesn’t just refer to the fireworks at Bellevue nearby. Dance to swing, soul and rock’n’roll in the guilds ballroom. Strictly no electro or minimal for once. Entry: Register on Facebook.
Saturday, 31 Dec, 11.30 pm, Weisser Wind
Try a new recipe

The title of the cookbook ‘The Cook and the Cowboy’ intrigued me. And no, it’s not about preparing leathery old men for dinner. If you have a bit of time on your hands, flip through the pages online. It’s a cookbook about cattle farming in the prairie of Alberta with beautiful pictures and 20 recipes. It’s a real man’s book, all about meat, but no beef prime cuts, rather, how you can turn the rest into a fabulous meal. I think it’s one of the first cookbooks in English I came across, where the chef is Swiss: Franz Widmer, chef at Hyatt. I have a copy of the book to give away. Just send me an e-mail. Or you can order it via the website of frawi.
Track down new music

We are hunted is a music site that collates the collective mind hum of what’s being discussed on the web, as people write about artists and their music on blogs and social media sites. From this they generate a hit parade of 99 songs. Besides listening to the songs you can browse through biographies, read reviews from other users, create playlists, download free songs or even buy something. We Are Hunted is not new, but has received a face lift recently and is one of the best ways I’ve found to get out of a musical rut.
