Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 5.1.2012: Give away, James Brown & send in a photo

Happy 2012!

January always seems like such a bare month, so I decided to fill it with weekly presents, just to make sure that the year begins well. As a start I’ve got something for sound lovers: Two high quality TMicro 3 satellite speakers by Piega. If you like to win them, just send me a message with the subject “Piega”.
Give my love to the city, Ron

King of clubs

Dj Kingdom has been in the spotlight since the release of his debut back in 2010. He’s a Brooklyn born dj that has made a name for himself in London’s cooler corners, especially at Night Slugs. His tunes are heavy on the beats and bass but have definite hip-hop flavours. He’s also not afraid to throw in some global rhythms to keep things interesting. He plays at Longstreet Bar tonight.

The godfather strikes back

James Brown may have been known as the ‘hardest working man in show business’ but dying can certainly slow you down a bit. Now the funk, sweat and cheers that the Godfather of Soul brought to us in his living years is being rekindled by the James Brown Tribute Show. This group of Swiss funkateers bring the groove, the funk and the beat to Moods this Saturday. As the great Mr Brown so wisely put it, ‘Get up offa that thang and dance ‘til you feel better’. Indeed.
Saturday 8.30 pm, Moods

New year, new start

In the spirit of new beginnings, this Friday at Zukunft they avoid the usual techno fare and set themselves off in a new direction with Neu Start. Ms Hyde, fresh from Bukowski nights, and Jack Burningham will be djing and each brings with them a mix of global sounds. Whether it be African or Arabic, disco, soul or rock and roll, the one thing you can be sure of is that you can’t be sure what’s coming next.
Friday 11.30 pm, Zukunft

Art tour

Before Christmas I told you about the Kunstszene exhibition, which is showing artwork produced only from artists based in Zurich. As this was the only requirement to entry, the range and type of artist on show is very eclectic. Now you have a chance to meet with the artists, ask questions and have them discuss their art via a special tour. It takes place this Saturday and all you need to book is send an e-mail here. The tour costs chf15 and is followed by a café break and a like-minded chat with fellow art fiends.
Saturday 12.00pm, Kunstszene

Urban oasis

You may not have been aware, but housed in the basement of the Volkshaus is a sauna. It was built a hundred years ago and despite doing the hot job it was built for, it was really starting to show it’s age. So the place was closed a few months ago, and as of this Saturday, will have a new, fresh face to show the world. As well as a sauna area, it now also includes a hammam, massage and yoga. To celebrate this new urban oasis I have 2 x 2 tickets to give away. E-mail me.

Half naked

Every year, Urban Playground Zurich organises a No Pants Tram Ride (for the Brits No Trousers Tram Ride) as a part of the international movement improveeverywhere. If you like the idea, join in on Sunday - the more the merrier. You find all the details on their facebook page. And if cold legs aren’t your thing, you can always go on a No Pants Spotting Tram Ride.
Sunday, 2 to 4 pm, all around town
Feeling at home

Not just the name of the pretty café Dihei means home, the entire interior is making you feel welcome. Between 3 and 5 pm it’s Tea-Time: self-made English scones served with tea.  So far, I haven’t come across this in Zurich. And I’m sure it makes you feel, well, at home. They also serve a great lamb-burger with onion-jam. And you can order brunch until 4 pm. And… enough! You better go and have a look yourself, it’s worth the trip.

Photo 12
This beautiful photo of Lucerne (above) by the reader "ellegant" is one of the pictures which will be displayed at Photo12 in Zurich. Would you also like to see your picture at one of Switzerland’s most renowned photo fairs? Then take a photo of how you perceive Zurich (motto: give your city a face) and send a printed version with the name of your city on the back to: Blofeld Entertainment GmbH, Re: Ron Orp, Langstrasse 94, 8004 Zürich. If you write your name and address on the back, you might become the lucky winner of a Canon S100. The cameras were sponsored by Light & Byte and Canon. The fair then starts at 23 January.
Ron‘s favourite musician

Last time, when picking up a record at my favourite record shop, I received an excellent music tip: Jonti! Those who know and love Bibio, won’t get enough of the debut release Twirligig of the young South African. The abstract sound construction lies somewhere between psychedelic, pop and hip hop beats and invites to dream.
Dazed & Confused

Dazed Digital is the online branch of the magazine Dazed & Confused and belongs to my favourite reads on the web. The Guardian interviewed the two founders Jefferson Hack and Rankin: An interesting report about two men who aren’t confused at all after 20 years of Dazed & Confused. On the contrary. They’re always able to reinvent themselves and to keep track of the latest trends. Read article
