Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 19.1.2012: The year of the dragon, free food & remember Hubertus

January give away - Kochpost

There is one question, which we’ll ask all our lives. Mostly, at the end of a work day: What shall I cook today? The new city service Kochpost relieves you of that burden. As a subscriber you’ll receive every week a grocery bag filled with ingredients and four recipes. Two of these bags I give away today – just send me an e-mail. Tuck in!

Dark green

Liz Green is a UK singer/songwriter who brings the same dark cabaret sound to her music as Tom Waits does to his. Her voice may be smoother than Tom’s but this is still folk music presented as a Brothers Grimm fairytale– dark, melancholic and whimsical. In the dark nights of January this music seems totally at home. She has just released her debut album and plays live at Gonzo tonight.
Thursday 8 pm, Gonzo Club

Back to the future

Hubertus closed its doors about a year ago but if you remember those nights of dark, sweaty, electro abandon and would like to relive them somehow, you no longer need that time machine you’ve been working on over the Christmas break, as Remember Hubertus Fez will revive those nights for you. The location may be new, now at Apartment 22, but the djs, the music and the sweat remain unchanged.
Saturday 10 pm, Apartment 22

Real fake

From bedroom producer to fully-fledged electro guru, the UK’s Nathan Fake has been on an ever-ascending ride these last few years. As an artist on the ever-experimental Border Community record label, he has produced some great records bringing a combination of dreamy synth soundscapes and pounding beats to his melody infused tunes. He plays at Zukunft on Saturday supported by a couple of great local djs, John Player and P Bell.
Saturday 12 am, Zukunft

Nordic noise

Over the last decade or so, the Nordic countries have produced way more than their fair share of great bands and music. There’s maybe something to be said for 6-month long nights. The first Sounds Nordic, Sounds Good festival was organised last year by the embassies of these countries and X-tra to showcase this talent and now the second edition is here. There are 4 headliners to the festival: the crazy gypsy rock of Kaizers Orchestra, the supergroup Caligola, retro indie rockers Figurines and singer/songwriter Mirel Wagner
Sunday 8 pm, X-tra

Arab Spring

I recently realized that most Chambers of Commerce organise various events and discussion throughout the year. The lunch panel “Business Opportunities in the Wake of the Arab Spring” at Zunfthaus zur Meisen on Monday caught my eyes. If you’re also curious what experts, such as the CEO of Roche North and West Africa or the CEO of ABB Morocco and Tunisia have to share, then register yourself today as a guest for the talk with the Canadian-Swiss Chamber of Commerce.
Monday 11.30 am to 2 pm, Zunfthaus zur Meisen
What the Dickens!

Shakespeare. Dickens. Orp. Often cited as three of the greatest names of the English written word, but only one is celebrating his 200th birthday this year. During his lifetime, Charles Dickens created some of the best-loved and celebrated characters in the English language. Whether it's Oliver in the workhouse, Scrooge at Christmas or Pip on the moors each book created a vivid world that still resonates today. Museum Strauhof has a multi-media exhibition that is detailing Dickens’ life and fiction, as well as some of the mysteries that surrounded him.
Until March 4, Museum Strauhof

Good to know

On Monday the year of the dragon starts. So happy Chinese New Year to you! Friendship: Did you know that Zurich has a partner city in China? Kunming is the town, which gave the China Garden to the city in 1994, as a thank you for the water supply system that Swiss Engineers helped construct about 140 years ago. The garden is one of the highest ranked temple gardens outside of China. But you’ll have to wait until 24th of March until you can visit it again. Party: Hotel St Gotthard celebrates the Chinese New Year for the first time including Chinese live music, calligraphy dancing and kung-fu lions (if you find out, let me know!). And of course Chinese specialties. You can book a seat by sending an email to  [email protected]. Food: If all this talk made you yearn for Chinese, check out Suan Long. It was one of the first Chinese restaurants in Zurich. It’s a chain with several branches but I like their kitsch interior at Tessinerplatz best. Mànmànchi!
Favourite object: Megaphone

There are various speakers for the iPhone which all run on electricity or battery. That’s unnecessary thought the Italian designers of en&is while designing the MegaPhone. It functions like the gramophone and amplifies the sound through the horn form made of ceramics. Watch video
Fan managed football

In Mexico there‘s a football club that’s managed almost completely by the fans. The fans vote online or by text message about the line-up, bonuses and even team strategies. It’s a brave decision by FC Murcielago to pass on the reigns to their fans.  I’m curious to see how the team performs.
