Italian job

The Italian dj duo Keith & Supabeatz have had a lot of love splashed on them in the UK over the years with national airtime given to them by Radio1, winning the Franz Ferdinand remix competition and being signed to Fatboy Slim’s record label. They’ve also become go-to guys for remix magic from the likes of The 2 Bears and Soulwax. Tonight they headline at this week’s Neon, the electro night at Hive.
Thursday 11 pm, Hive

Culture clash

As opposed to the more traditional Tonhalle, the TonhalleLATE brand lures in a younger audience (under 25) with a surprising encounter between classical and electro music. David Zinman, conducting the renowned Tonhalle Orchestra, classically leads the event. This will be followed by a dj set from Evangelos. With dance floor, chill-out zone and bar all melding with the classical elements, this is culture clash at its best.
Friday 10 pm, Tonhalle

Free and easy

With all of the music festivals happening around Switzerland, it would be a shame to miss a free one that is delivered almost to your doorstep. Openair Wollishofen is now in its 5th year, and this one promises another set of great underground bands to enjoy. Headlining is UK band Spring Offensive along with a line-up of ‘must-hear, never-heard’ bands including Palko! muski who play the not to be missed genre of polka-punk. It may not be as big as other festivals but who needs size when you have rhythm. Free entry and lakeside setting.

For women

The Frauenbadi is generally exclusively for women, but every Wednesday and Sunday evening it opens the door to the male gender too, for its cultural and dance events. On the other nights it’s possible to book it for private and public event. So this Saturday, seven small Zurich labels and shops invite to the “Fête des Femmes”, where they present fashion and accessories in the beautiful, nostalgic environment of Frauenbadi.

Thunder of the future

This Saturday, Zukunft is home to Rumpelnacht – a thunderous night with Portable (live), A.C. Kupper and Kalabrese. All of them are exceptional talents which combine beautiful melodies and rhythms but never give in to main stream. Portable’s strong voice reminds of Ian Curtis -. if he was still alive and would make dance music.  With Kupper and Kalabrese you’re never sure what to expect, but it will certainly rock and amaze you.
Saturday from midnight, Zukunft

Eating – Hardhof

Hardhof has been gracing Albisriederplatz for many years. But I never noticed it until its renovation and refurbishment this March. After hearing my friends raving about the food, I finally made it a short time ago and visited Hardhof on a Monday evening. That it’s open on a Monday is its first plus. The simple but comfortable interior the second. Followed shortly by more points for friendly staff and a small but appetizing menu. We chose the vegetarian option with crisp mushroom rolls served on a vegetable bed, forgoing the classics like Cordon Bleu for once. And honestly, I wasn’t aware that a dish which sounds so simple could taste so good. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. Hardhof has average Zurich prices (which aren’t low) but the quality is excellent.

Good to know

This Friday at 6 pm, the eyes of the world turn to Warsaw for the kick –off game of the European football championship between Poland and Greece. May the best team win! I look forward to these weeks full of football, socializing and beer drinking – although a little upset that it takes place without the Swiss national team. If you wish to watch the games in public, the choices are wide. Here a few of my favourites: Restaurant Hiltl organises a public viewing next to the alte Güterbahnhof in Altstetten, which will fit up to 1000 people. Entry is for free. If you prefer to watch your game along the river, Planet 5 at Sihlquai screens all the games in their lovely backyard. For true soccer fans, Calvados at Idaplatz is a good place to be, where all games are shown on large screens.

What’s in a name?

It was the name that first caught my eye. Who could resist a band named Gully and the Pepperhumbels? But this Zurich band is more than just a cute name. They play a potent blend of power pop and white-funk with great lyrics including one song about a television asking to be your girlfriend. They play at the suitably sweaty La Catrina next Tuesday.

The city that never sleeps

Zurich’s public transport created an app, Züri Schlaflos not to check the schedule but to about clubs, cafés, bars, restaurants, shops and cinemas along the tram lines 3 and 4, as well as bus line 32. If your German isn’t fluent, you won’t get much of the audio tracks, telling stories to each place. But you can still use the “shake it” function for a pub crawl through town. You shake your phone and it’ll suggest the next bar to head to. Always along the line you’re on, guiding you with a map to the next place. I’m sure you’ll discover some new haunts that way.

Ron’s Favourite Song

Take a 19 year old from Nottingham, have him sing a rollicking thumper of a tune and set the video on the streets of Amsterdam. Voila: Lightning Bolt by Jake Bugg. Enjoy
