Theatre is perhaps the art that best allows an immediate reaction and symbiosis between audience and artist, but the Belgium experimental theatre company, Ontroerend  Goed’s ‘A Game of You’, takes this aspect to an extreme at Gessnerallee this weekend. Only one audience member is allowed to enter the show at a time and, as the premise of performer and viewer becomes increasingly blurred, each person will be taken on a personal and memorable trip. Telephone reservations are a must.
Friday/Saturday 4 pm to 6.35 pm and 9 pm to 11.35 pm, Gessnerallee

Paddle power

Stand-up paddle (SUP) surfing originated in Polynesia, and like any self-respecting surf sport has, of course, ended up in the Zurich lake. This Friday, you and a friend can enter the excitingly entitled Team Paddle Battle at Seebad Enge. Split into Fun and Pro categories, it’s just 8 loops of manic paddling, and I suspect a little falling, separating you from eternal surfing glory. Giving you a chance to regale everyone with your stories of surfing dare later, djs Simon and Pocahontas will be bringing a beach party vibe to the after hours. Registration
Friday 3.30 pm, Seebad Enge

Will the system call back?

What’s the system and how can I fuck it? If this seems like an eminently reasonable question to you, you should be getting yourself to Cabaret Voltaire. The online short film festival, fuckfuckfuck.org, asked people to react to this question and to send in their filmed responses.  Whether it’s captured via mobile telephone or on Kubrick-like cinematic proportions, all entries are being shown and discussed at Cabaret Voltaire this Friday. If you’d still like to send in an entry yourself, the deadline is also Friday. Fuck the system, I say. Send it in Saturday. That’ll show them.
Friday 8 pm, Cabaret Voltaire

Hat tricks – olé, olé

Do you need a straw hat for the summer? In my opinion, LeTom from Zurich has one of the nicest ranges available. And this Friday, founder Rolf invites you to the opening of his shop/showroom/office, most likely the smallest shop in town just next to the Freitag-Tower. There will be bbq and drinks and as the weather should play along, you won’t have to squeeze into the small room but can socialise outdoors in the nice Geroldareal.
Friday 6 pm, LeTom (Geroldstrasse 18)

Chill out

Cindy & Kate present a new event series, starting this Saturday. Close to the main station at Galerie 16b you find tunes by Dome De Rosa, AllyWell, Kayser and Dieda in a unique environment with a beautiful courtyard to chill. For all smokers (or maybe an even more important note for all non-smokers) -smoking is allowed. And entry is for free. The sun should be out, so dance that it stays!
Saturday 8 pm (open end), Galerie 16b (Ausstellungsstrasse 16b)

M83 to ZH

M83 were lucking enough to grace my Ron’s Favourite Song section a few months ago and now, as if led by the communal foot tapping of all you Ronsters, they have found their way to Komplex457 this Tuesday. So if you like your electro-pop to have the synth shimmer of an 80’s daydream, melodies that can only be described as epic and Air just isn’t doing it for you these days, then it’s time you got yourself a new favourite French band for the summer.
Tuesday 8 pm, Komplex457

Urban gardening for all

This Friday, Veg and the City start a series of workshops around urban gardening for balconies and window sills. In three-hours-evening classes you’re taught the basics (theory and practice) regarding preparation, planting and care-taking. You bring along a pot that you would like to use. So after the course you can already take a piece of your own small garden home with you. Costs: 60 francs (includes soil, seedlings and seeds).

Good to know

Soccer is in the air. And if you like to watch the games in company, I have some tips for you, a selection of a few special locations. Additionally, I created a map, which lists all venues that screen the games. Nordbrücke: One of my favourites in town. The restaurant has two terraces, one dedicated to the games, the other reserved for those who prefer to avoid the European Cup. Indoor the games are shown on a large screen and the final will be shown outdoors on Röschibachplatz. Kaiser Franz: This venue is the new kid on the block, managed by the Club Gonzo team. If you want to watch one of the games, it’s a good opportunity to check out this new locale. All games are shown on a large screen and they have beer from all around the world. Popup Arena: The place where the European Cup is shown from its artistic side and all games on a large screen. Watch soccer in an alternative environment, with beer from the countries that are playing. A grill is available and you can bring your own bbq.

Ron's favourite artist: Reggie Watts

Reggie Watts is – in my opinion – a very talented and friendly artist and comedian. In a recently published video he disorientates his audience first by changing fluently from one language to another until he entertains later on with his surprising voice range. But that’s not all. The video becomes really interesting when he starts underlining his rather unsubstantial remarks with different sounds. Watch

Painting in the tunnel

A wall in a tunnel (or underpass), lined with a 25 metres long black board. Next to it a vending machine with chalk. It’s simple to summarize the project by Nevercrew, which was submitted at Arte Urbane Lugano 2012. I love that idea. Every passer-by can kill some time by writing or drawing on the walls. And the rather dark train and street connections become much friendlier and personal. More about the project
