Dadagaga

Just to prove that there is nothing new under the sun, Cabaret Voltaire have the opening night of their new exhibition, I Am Art, tonight. The exhibition will compare the work of Baroness Dada and Lady Gaga, two artists who are separated by over a 100 years but each having the ability to shock their respective cultures. Baroness Dada was a well-known New York futurist whose art but, more directly, her fashion statements seem to mirror what Lady Gaga is also attempting to do. Birdcage hat containing a live bird? Reciting poetry with nothing but tea-balls on her breasts? Both are Dada, but surely also Gaga.
Thursday 6 pm to 26 August, Cabaret Voltaire

Creative kids

I’ve mentioned Olga Stefan to you in past newsletters as someone who organises great art tours around Zurich but she has now taken the leap to curating her own art show called My Little Art Museum. Together with the kids from her son’s 2nd grade class, they each designed an exhibition space in a shoebox, then selected one of these miniature works to be made into the actual gallery show. All the kid’s have also made, and will display, art at the exhibition with any money raised from the sale of their works to be given to the WWF. Art, kids and animals. This is just all too cute.
Friday 6 pm – 8 pm, Galerie le Sud, Bachstrasse 9, 8038

Tales of the riverbank

My gaze has been drawn to the riverside quarter of Wipkingen this weekend as Openair Wipkingen rocks out again with two stages of some great underground talent. Whether it be rap, electro or rock you’re looking for, this mini festival is punching above it’s weight with Zigitros, Baze & Band and Abby part of the line up. If you also want a change of scene, you can drift 10 minutes upstream to the Bahnwagen am Letten, the train carriage/bar, where they also have their own summerfest. Evelinn Trouble, Comeback Special and Flying Moustache will be playing live.
Saturday 5 pm, Openair Wipkingen, Wipkinger Park
Saturday 7 pm, Bahnwagen am Letten, Wasserwerkstrasse, 8037

Ooooom

Yoga has become very popular – especially amongst woman. Though it was brought to the west from India by a linage of male teachers, there’s now a generation of women who are leading the way. The film “Yogawoman” shows the female side of yoga, from the busy streets of Manhattan to the dusty slums of Kenya. This Sunday, yoga studio Sanapurna screens this film to support yogi Deborah who needs to travel to the USA for a lifesaving kidney treatment. Good karma points guaranteed.
Sunday 6.30 pm, Schöneggstrasse 10, 8004

Drinking: Kafi für dich

Kafi für Dich is one of my favourite locales and finally, the construction site that surrounded the venue for the past six month has gone. The tables outside are back, new seedlings planted and the sun is shining. To celebrate this – Kafi für Dich offers a glass of prosecco this Saturday and you can get hot stuff from the grill. Sounds like a good start into the weekend.
Saturday 6 pm, Kafi für dich

Dark answer

It’s hard to tell sometimes if Die Antwoord are deadly serious or just an art project that’s got a little out of control but either way the look and sound of this South African rap-rave group is always visceral. Taking their inspiration from Zef, a term used to describe the South African street counter-culture, the lyrics by lead vocalists Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er are filled with images of sex and violence while the backing beats and rhythms will do nothing to ease your sleepless nights. Dark as a nightmare and just as unforgettable. They play at Komplex 457 on Monday.
Monday  8 pm, Komplex 457

Good to know

I’m closely following the European Cup so I want to share some more public viewing venues with you. Piccolo Giardino: The locale at Schöneggplatz 9 is dedicated to football all year round. The tapas bar shows all the games on two outdoor screens as well as on a large tv on the square. You can follow the games indoors as well, while enjoying your Giardino-Burger. Z am Park: At Zurlindestrasse 275 you can watch the matches indoors as well as outdoors. And you can bet on all the games. If you want to make sure to get a table, book ahead. Ziegelhütte: Schwamedingen rarely features in my newsletter, but for this football tournament Ziegelhütte at Hüttenkopfstrasse 70 provides one of the most innovative public viewings in town (well, almost in town). Outdoor flat screens are hanging from trees and there is a large screen indoors (the hall’s door stand wide open when then weather is nice). Food comes from ‘the city’s largest bbq’ and this Friday, after the game, they’ll show a documentary about George Best that focuses on the cup final between MU and Coventry City in 1970.

Shopping: Japanese fashion

Swiss-Japanese fashion designer Kazu Huggeler is known for her patterns, which recreate the kimono. This Saturday she is celebrating her label’s 10th anniversary with an apéro, telling stories about her garments and the symbiosis between Japanese and Swiss culture. You will be able to try on the creations and have a professional picture taken by photographer Julie Collins. Stylist Catronia Cardie will be at hand to help you chose the perfect style. Send an email or register in advance. 35 francs
Saturday 4-6 pm, Kazu
