Three months ago, the Street-Files Team and myself set up the Print Your Skillz Contest and asked you to send in t-shirt designs under the topic Urban Signs. Now it's time to select the best design for the first Ron Orp t-shirt. So vote or comment on your favourite. I'll choose the design from the top five, meaning the five designs which received the most likes or comments. Vote!

Being in the middle of Europe, Zurich always gets a lot of passing trade from international bands making their merry way around on tour but I also get a kick out of highlighting some good home-grown talent that can hold its own against the infidels. Mo Blanc are a Zurich band who recently won a DRS-3 Best Talent contest and tonight are having a party for the release of their debut cd at Exil. So, if you like your indie-pop sprinkled with a little acoustic melancholy, these local boys could be your new favourite band.

If your nights out have been lacking a certain stylishness of late, then you might want to get yourself down to Prohibition21 at Moods this Friday. Jeans, trainers and t-shirts are definitely banned and vintage clothing from the 20’s through to the 50’s is actively encouraged. They’ll have a live swing band and djs for you to lindy-hop and bop the night away, and if you have no idea what I just said, they’ll also have a crash course for lindy-hop noobs before the doors open. Entry 45 francs.
Friday 6.30pm, Moods

On the ground floor of the tallest building in Switzerland sits Hotel Rivington & Sons, a great bar that seems to pride itself on its style and décor, as well as giving me a few great nights out. This Friday they’ll be celebrating they’re first year of being open and, as you might expect, are putting on a party. Along with an aperitivo buffet you’ll be able to hear the soulful croonings of the Soul Maniacs and 2forsoul playing live as well as Soulsonic aka Herr Wempe djing into the early hours. Entry is free.

So, hands up. Which Chinese city is Zurich twinned with? Well done, I’m sure you all said Kunming, the capital and largest city of Yunnan province. Artist Stephen Schacher decided to ask 31 creative people in both cities one question – ‘What would you do to change the world in 31 days?” – and he is showing their answers along with a portrait of each person at an exhibition entitled ‘31 Days, 31 Ways 31 Minds’ at the Photogarage starting this Saturday.

The party label, SubClub, have been pretty active of late, putting on some fantastic nights around town. This Saturday will be their first time at Stall 6 and have decided to invite a couple of great acts to mark the occasion. XXYYXX is a 16 year old from Florida who crafts the chillingest of chill-out tunes in his bedroom studio, but despite his age and bedroom antics has been noticed and praised by those who know about these things. Second is Giraffage, not only a great name but also an artist who delights in the dreamy. He calls his music dream-pop and who am I to argue.

In his book Snowdrops, A. D. Miller tells a dark and mysterious story about burning passion, the Russian soul and Moscow today. This Wednesday, the Booker Price nominee will read from his debut novel – “totally exciting” according to The Times – at Kaufleuten. If you go for dinner there beforehand, they’ll reserve you a front seat if you tell them that you’ll attend the reading afterwards.

What am I grateful for? That you're one of my readers! You might think I'm too early, but this Monday is Canadian Thanksgiving, while the Americans have to wait until 22nd of November. And after all, it's never too early to get organised. For all Canadians - there will be a Thanksgiving Brunch in Geneva this Saturday. If you like to host an event at home, get in touch with Melt Catering who is known for her roasted turkey and a lovely squash. On 22nd November, The American Women's Club Zurich will host a luncheon. Or get your own turkey. Either from Manor Food Market (organic, free range, Swiss) or order it with chef made side dishes at Hyatt. Happy Thanksgiving!
