100% Zurich, 3% Ron

At the end of last year, Zurich had 390,082 inhabitants. 196,802 were female, 193,280 were male. 1% lived in Kreis 1. 16% were over 65 years old. Nearly 3% were divorced and 5% married. Statistics can be interesting but have a way of obscuring the humanity behind the numbers.  100% Zurich by German/Swiss collaborators Rimini Protokoll, will stage a performance at Gessenerallee where they will have 100 people on stage, each equivalent to 1%, that represents a condensed version of the population of Zurich. How many are foreigners? Unemployed? Saved a life? Like to party all night? See the statistics come alive as the group moves and reconfigures on stage. How many receive my mail every week? That’ll be nearly 3 of the lucky devils.
Thursday until 21st October 8 pm, Gessenerallee

Off the beaten track

If you feel like taking a change from your routine when it comes to your nightlife, then you should head to Galerie 16b (Ausstellungsstrasse 16b) on Saturday. Cindy & Kate offer an alternative in a rustic building, with a lovely inner courtyard to hang out (the weather should be good this weekend!) and music by djs Sany Sanderson, Giulia Paradiso, Kayser, Niclas and NikA. Add cheap drinks and free entry to this mix and you’ll have to ask yourself, what more could I want? Entry for free
Saturday 8 pm, Galerie 16b

UK-Swiss Combo

One is British, one Bernese, but what have Goldpana and Dimlite in common? Both are known for great live sets and their psychedelic and danceable music. Quirky and never boring, the two djs will play live at Zukunft this Saturday.  So if you’re already getting the winter blues, head to the dance floor and shake, shake, shake, all night long. Get lost in tunes and rhythms and let yourself be twirled around by electronic baselines combined with hip hop beats and Asian and Oriental tones. Tickets: 45 francs
Saturday 11 pm, Zukunft

British abroad

Helen Marten is a great young British artist who has been exhibiting at Kunsthalle Zurich with a show entitled ‘Almost the exact shape of Florida’. She works mostly with sculpture and installations but occasionally dabbles in the digital realm, with her influences seeming to stem from architecture, pop, design and fashion. This latest exhibition sees her using the whole gallery space, from floor to ceiling, to explore the relationships between the surface of things and their real nature.
Sunday 11 am to 5 pm, Kunsthalle Zurich

Piggott pop

The Piggott Brothers seem like an odd prospect for me to recommend. Individually, the brothers have acted in numerous tv series in their homeland of Canada, as well as auditioning, and making the finals of, the Canadian version of Pop Idol. All of this mainstream respectability doesn’t normally make them attractive for inclusion here, and yet…and yet, there’s something about their folk inspired, blue-eyed soul that sounds like the real deal to me. They’re currently touring a new album and will be playing live at Langstars on Monday. Entry is free.
Monday 9 pm, Langstars Backpacker Hostel

Eating: La Luna

On my website someone mentioned the restaurant La Luna. La Luna? I didn’t know this venue, so I had to go and check it out. The sweet locale hides at Militärstrasse 14 right next to Hafenkneipe. Its interior is simple and the menu short – all reduced to the essential. But that doesn’t apply to the food itself, which consist of very tasty and lovingly cooked pasta dishes. Additionally you can chose from a daily menu. And I also should mention the staff, as I haven’t experienced such an attentive service in a long time. It hasn’t been open for long but if they stay true to themselves, I’m sure La Luna will become a success.

Mon-Wed: 8 am to 4 pm, Thu-Fr: 8 am to 5 pm

Good to know – Goodbye Olé Olé
Langstrasse is changing constantly, many established venues had to make place for new ones and with the final stage of the Europaallee, a different wind will blow into my beloved street. One of my favourite haunts was the Olé Olé Bar. It’s where I had the idea for this newsletter with a couple of friends. The place where it all began... So why do I write “was my favourite haunt”? Since a few days, Olé Olé has closed its doors. The owner – who’s been there for forty years, and has run the place together with her siblings – is ill and won’t be able to come back. Most likely, the building will be sold; the betting war has started already. I wish you, Rita Guyer, all the best. I will miss you. And Langstrasse will never be the same again without Olé Olé.

Guide to electronic music

Facebook continues to eat the internet and with it’s ever improving services, doesn’t look to be stopping any time soon. One of it’s recent tweaks was the introduction of the timeline, and while it clearly has it’s benefits, it does seem that there is still some potential of this service yet to explore. The guys at Bleep have tried to do this by creating the guide to electronic music on Facebook. It’s a fantastic collection of landmark tunes and videos showing the full history of electronic music, all presented via the Facebook timeline. Surprisingly, it doesn’t begin in the 1970’s but in 1857. Check it out.

Enticing music

She is a Greek folkloristic singer, who had to hide her talent as a child. He is a German composer, who cannot read notes. Together they’re a married couple and Sea + Air. Over the last ten years they played at over 1000 concerts including as the warm up band for White Stripes, José Gonzales and Sportfreunde Stiller. This year, they finally launched their debut album with easy going pop songs. Beautiful!
