Elastic rap

Unlike many of today’s rappers, Jeremiah Jae stays away from the upbeat bling and swagger of the genre and instead goes for a more hazy, 4am type of vibe. His beats also have an elastic, almost hallucinogenic feel that make this New York rapper’s music sound like it’s coming from the inside of a drug fuelled dream. He plays at Rote Fabrik tonight and I have 2 x 2 tickets to give away- E-mail me.
Thursday 8.30 pm, Rate Fabrik

Secret artists

If you're an artist who thinks the world would be a better place if it knew about your talent but those stupid venues and galleries just won't open their doors to you and allow you to shine? Well, Starkart have answered your prayers. For the next 4 weeks they are holding an exhibition called Mir Händs Nötig that is un-curated, un-censored and un-deniably yours. They have 250sqm of space, so just bring your work along, put it where you want and wait for the world to gasp in amazement.
Friday until 20th April, Starkart Exhibitions, Brauerstrasse 126, 8004

Call the poliça

A few months ago I told you about Poliça being in my ‘favourite song’ section and now, due primarily I think to that mention in the newsletter, they have come to Zurich to play live at Plaza on Saturday. Their music is built around electronic swirls and strings but is given real depth by having two drummers playing rhythm as well as the lead singer's voice treated through auto-tune to give it a unique and ethereal quality.
Saturday 7.30 pm, Plaza

Time travel

Sometimes you want the cutting-edge but sometimes you just want the comfort of the old and familiar. At Piccolo Giardino on Saturday they are having a ‘Land of a 1000 Dances’ night with djs Scheibenreiter & Bogaloo playing tunes from the 40’s up to the 60’s. This may not be what the future will sound like but the past isn’t a bad country to spend some time and get to know the locals.
Saturday 11 pm, Piccolo Giardino

Canadian babes

New Brunswick or Nouveau-Brunswick is the only bilingual province in Canada, and the origin of Les Hay Babies. The three females switch back and forth between the two languages with the hypnotic melodies and floating harmonies that I find typical for folk/country indie music. Although they’ve only published six songs so far, they’ve already shared the stage with Motorleague, The Novaks, The Backyard Devils, Les Paiens, Canailles and Lisa LeBlanc. If you want to know why, head to El Lokal on Monday. Tickets 28 francs
Monday 8 pm, El Lokal

A breath of France

Welschland, a charming shop on Zweierstrasse 56, offers specialities from the French part of Switzerland (hence the name), where you'll find various soft and hard cheeses, cheese for Raclette and mixtures for Fondue (two Swiss dishes with melted cheese). The owners Jürg Steiner and Laurent Houriet are behind the counter from Tuesday to Saturday and are there for any questions you might have about one of the products (they know everything and are always willing to give samples – cheese, cured meat or sausages). Every week, Laurent Houriet drives to the French part to visit farmers, butchers, small producers, wine makers and cheese makers to find the best products for their shop: Mustard with honey, home-made jam, special oils and vinegars, local wines, syrups and various kind of chocolates; my recommendation: absinthe pralines.

Good to know

The sun is shining, the birds are singing – well, at least for a few days we got an impression of what spring could be like. Time to get back on your bike. If you don't own a bicycle, be assured that it's the easiest and often the fastest vehicle to get around town. This Saturday you can buy a cheap bike at the City Council Bike Auction. All bikes are second hand, have been collected in Zurich and which no one has claimed back. The city fathers have then kindly cleaned and fixed them. Bids start at 50 francs. If you don't have time to go this Saturday, the next auction takes place on 27th of April.
Saturday 1 pm viewing / 1.30 pm auction, Limmatstrasse 114

Play it Loud: Ron’s playlist for the weekend

Lately I came across a few pretty cool songs and shared them on different channels. But now it’s high time to eternalise this colourful potpourri into a playlist. And as the weekend starts soon, I’ve got it for you here and now, live from YouTube. For you. From me. Enjoy!

Almost everyone owns a smart phone and some pay it more attention than their environment. Ulterior Productions created a short film about these smart phone junkies that is worth to be watching full screen – i.e. on your computer. Watch Valibation
