Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 25.4.2013: Ron's birthday party, summertime & dancing

Dear friends,
It’s time for another Ron Orp Party so mark the 30 April (see entry further below for details). And as I plan to dance into Labour Day and on - there won’t be a newsletter next week. But I’ll included two previews for that week, so you’ll still know what’s going on.
Give my love to the city, Ron

Cold hand, warm heart

Kalte Hand/Natasha Waters are a Swiss duo that has been making mini electropop masterpieces over the last five years or so. Kalte Hand is the beat meister, creating a subtle blend of dark and danceable sounds over which Zurich singer Natasha sprinkles her fragile and uplifting melodies. Djs Mitsutek and Parabois will continue the evening into the early hours.  They are playing at Longstreet Bar tonight and entry is free.
Thursday 9 pm, Longstreet Bar

Pieces of music

It must be the warm insistence of summer knocking on my door that’s getting me in the mood for a little ambient electronica this week. Fragments are a French trio who will be playing live at the Wiedikon Bundeshaus, an unusual venue I’ve not mentioned a lot in the past. Fragments use a mixture of synths and real instruments to create soundscapes reminiscent of Boards of Canada, with great swirling crescendos and gentle floating sections that distill summer’s essence into dream-like music.
Friday 9 pm, Bundeshaus zu Wiedikon

Party with Ron

The last party hosted by VICE and Ron Orp was a great joint affair, so we’ll keep going to celebrate Ron’s 9th birthday. This year it's being held at Remise. I don’t want to spoil the suprise by telling too much about the acts, but I promise i’ll fly in something/someone very special. Entry: 9 francs
Tuesday 10 pm, Remise

Working the day

In Switzerland, Labour Day is a non-working day and I’m already looking forward to having the day off – nurturing my hang over, meeting friends and watching the parade. In the evening, one of Zurich’s finest will play at Kaufleuten. Kalabrese celebrates the launch of his latest release with a concert. I’m glad I won’t have to publish the newsletter that week, as the party moves to Bar3000 afterwards. Concert tickets 30 francs / after party for free
Wednesday 8 pm, Kaufleuten / After party at Bar3000

Preview 1: Sun screen

The sun is coming and it made me realise – I need new sun glasses. If you’re in the same situation - the 2nd Vintage Sunglasses Day might be the event you were looking for. On Saturday, Timetunnel in Niederdorf has 600 vintage sun glasses on offer. Prices start at 25 francs but can go up to 900 francs for especially unique pieces.
Saturday, 4th May, 2 - 9 pm, Timetunnel

Preview 2: We dance Zurich

Zurich will be moving from Friday to Sunday. More than 13 different international dance projects will take place all around town, and in some of them you can even join in. Zürich tanzt will rock the main station, offer a Zumba crash course and take over the tram. There will be everything from lindy hop and hip hop to waltz and flamenco, from improvisational to classical. I’m sure you’ll find something in their programme to put on your dancing shoes.
Friday to Sunday, 3rd to 5th May, all around town

Yummy

No space in your kitchen for cook books? With the new app Caramelized you can store all your favourite books and recipes on your iPad. The guys, who’re behind the app, like to cook themselves and transferred selected books beautifully into the digital world. With integrated extras such as instruction films and shopping list. Download, the first book and previews are for free.

Each to their own

Of all the things to do before I die, there are a few which I can easily skip. For example -  a trapeze show on a paraglide. Gill Schneider and Roxane Giliand have done just that, while Sham Prod filmed it all. I get dizzy just watching it. See for yourself

Ron’s favourite song

You may have sensed from the newsletter that I’m definitely getting in the mood for summer. If you need a little nudge in the same sunny direction, À tout à l'heure by Bibio will be a good place to start.
