I’m back, and as promised I brought the sun with me. I’m happy to be back but I’m less happy about some con artists who are present on my website in the classified section, offering flats that are not real. It’s always more or less the same story: They bought a flat at a great location but had to move for a new job (for some reason, mostly to London). Because they are so desperate and don’t find a tenant for their great flat, they’ll send you the key immediately if you transfer some money. Don’t! If an offer sounds too good to be true, it mostly is! If you see a suspicious ad, let me know asap so I can delete it and blacklist the person. Cheers!

Dark-hearted dance
 
Austra are an electro-synth trio from Canada who have been creating dark-hearted dance tunes for the last couple of years. If you can imagine Depeche Mode getting in touch with their feminine side, you’ll have an idea of their sound. They have a new album, Home, out soon and will be playing for the first time in Zurich at Plaza tonight. I have 3 x 2 tickets to give away. E-mail me.

Never one to shy away from upsetting, well, anyone with modern views of the world, Al Murray the Pub Landlord is leaving his beloved England and is coming to Zurich to delight us with his, let’s call them, special insights. He’s one of the best and most successful comedians to come out of the UK in the past 10 years, and just in case you were forgetting why England is better than every other country in the whole wide world, ever, then let Al Murray gently remind you. The Top Egg Festival is going to be the centre for all that is loud, colourful and chaotic in Zurich this weekend. Over the 2 days of the festival inside Remise and their accompanying circus tent, there will be 7 bands playing live, all with a rock-metal-synth-art twist, Splätterlitheater will be combining hand puppets and horror, Larry’s Tattoo Show is clearly trouble waiting to happen, a great eclectic selection of djs and just in case things start to get out of hand, they have a free children’s afternoon on Saturday, just to briefly bring things back to a state of innocence for a few hours.

Festival frenzy
 
As the weekend will be sunny and hot (trust me), i thought i’d try to get you outside to remind you what a blue sky actually looks like. Zurich has 2 mini openairs happening this weekend - both are free, both have a good selection of eclectic music and both will be out in the glorious sunshine. The Landenbergfest is happening on Friday/Saturday in Wipkingen and includes the bands The Hillbilly Moon Explosion, The Sinful Saints and Gutter Queens, and if those names don’t get you excited, you can try Openair Wollishofen on Saturday next to the lake. It has another good choice of bands as well as a Poetry Slam and children’s corner. Now get outside before autumn arrives.

Summer bazaar
 
As we’ve been waiting so long for summer to begin, and it looks finally like we might be close, the Bazar in Stall 6 on Saturday afternoon has an ‘all for summer’ theme running through every stall and design for sale. It looks like they haven’t forgotten that men also like to get a little sunshine between our toes and have a good selection of menswear on offer. And just in case you can’t wait to show-off your new summer things, there is a Balkan disco after-party from 10 pm with djs Al-Ain Ford and Bob Rock the Casbah.

City and Colour is a band that seems to have been bubbling at the edges of my consciousness for a while now without ever really frothing over. Although those that do know their music, really seem to love it. So if you like your music strummed on an acoustic guitar and the songs to be heartfelt, melancholic and beautiful, then Monday evening at Komplex 457 could be where you need to be. Perhaps turning bubbles into froth.

Danish style
 
A banana attacked Marie’s book in the bag, as she couldn’t find any product to prevent this from happening again, she decide to invent it herself: the bookwrap. It’s produced in five colours and four sizes. The material ecological but waterproof and from every sale, some money is donated to charity.  A cool item, developed by a Danish expat in Zurich. The launch takes place on Wednesday at hotel/ restaurant Helvetia.

Waste with taste
 
Quite a few restaurant openings took place, while I was gone. But I’ll introduce you to all of them over the next couple of weeks. My favourite is a final project of the art school called “Good Food For You For Free!” Yes, lunch for free until 12th of June (except for the weekend) – though you have to be a little bit daring. The food comes from immaculate waste, meaning they use products that would be thrown out otherwise but are still fine. There is no risk involved – this is safe old Switzerland after all! If you're intersted in this topic generally: Next Thursday, there is a conference discussing strategies against food waste (German only)
