Neither fish nor film

Fischer’s Fritz is the tasty fish restaurant located in Zurich’s lakeside campsite. Yes, Zurich has a campsite. And until the 29th June they are running their Cinema Unlimited open-air movie nights. They’ve got a nice selection of films showing which include Into the Wild, Fahrenheit 451 and, of course, given its location, Big Fish. Don’t worry about waking any sleeping campers as you’ll be given a set of headphones to listen to the movie in either the original language or German.
Until 29th June, Fischer’s Fritz, Camping Wollishofen

It’s all made up

Hopefully I keep your funny bone oiled with the big name comedians I usually tell you about as they pass through town, but on Friday and Saturday at Lebewohlfabrik a group from the Zurich Comedy Club will be putting on The Improvables Show, a comedy improv evening. With no scripts, and only the suggestions/heckles from the audience to work with, nothing is guaranteed except for a few laughs along the way.
Friday and Saturday 7.30 pm, Lebewohlfabrik

Life becomes electronic

If all that’s missing in your life is a 2-day hit of the purist electronica, then prepare yourself to become one with the universe. The Zwei Tage Strom festival takes place on Friday and Saturday across two venues - Exil and Kunsthalle Zurich. On the line-up are an international mix of live performers and djs whose styles run the gamut from the pneumatically distorted to the acoustically calm. I have 1 x 2 festival passes to give away. E-mail me.
Friday 7.15 pm, Kunsthalle
Saturday  1.30 pm, Kunsthalle and 9.30 pm, Exil

Aiming high

Many know them, few can enter them. Roof terraces: the urban oasis in Zurich. Most of them are private, so I started a new movement to make them public for a day. To enjoy a day on various roof terraces around town with culture and party. And hurrah, many agreed. Mark this Saturday as the first Roof Top Day in town!  I put together a programme – sorry, it’s in German only but I went for a swim instead to cool down  – for you to decide where you want to be: At the flea market, at the school of arts, the BBQ at Konradstrasse, playing Petanque at Les Garcons or partying at Goldbrunnenstrasse. Ten locations await you – and they all come with a good view.
Saturday all day, all around town

New kid on the block

Kafi für Dich, the restaurant/bar just next to Bäckeranlage, has opened a second venue. Damm für Dich. Between Untere Letten and Nordbrücke, the restaurant Damm has been around for a while. But now, fresh air has moved in. This Saturday, the new venue invites you to a “ flea market and a celebration of being together”. When the venue will open is not clear yet, but I’ll keep you posted.
Saturday from 12 pm, Damm für Dich

Openair Wipkingen

If you’re worried to let the sun out of your sight for too long, just in case it takes the summer with it, then this Saturday at Openair Wipkingen will be the ideal spot to keep an eye on that fickle beast. Yes, another free, open-air music festival is happening in town! It’s located just next to the river and has a fine selection of slightly left field and electronic acts including Bit-Tuner, Pollyester and Signori Misteriosi.
Saturday 5 pm, Openair Wipkingen, Wipkingerpark

Fresh sounds

No one can make a jangling guitar sound like the pining of a teenage heart quite like American bands, and The Fresh and Onlys have learnt this lesson well. With a sound caught somewhere between The Byrds and The Cure, they know how to make a song both melancholy and joyful at the same time. They’ve also got harmonies and melody to spare. They play at El Lokal on Monday night.
Monday 8 pm, El Lokal

Good to know

I’m glad to live in a city with several water points: the river, the lake and various outdoor pools. If you plan to spend a lot of your free time around water, there is a Sportabo available. So instead of paying 7 francs each time, for an annual fee of 220 francs, you’ll get unlimited access to all 24 city outdoor and indoor pools in Zurich. And the good news: If you buy your Sportabo until the 31st August they give you an extra month for free. Otherwise: The swimming areas at the Limmat are for free (except for Frauenbadi).

Love me tender

Same, same but never different, always with the same partner in the same position at the same place? Maybe you need the Lovebox then. Every month the service sends you erotic surprises by mail to bring back the spark. Curious? I have three test boxes to give away for free. Just send me an email (to [email protected]) and let me know, why you should receive one (but please spare me the exotic details). Everyone who takes part in the draw, will receive a 10-francs-voucher from Lovebox. Unless you’re one of the winners of course.

Time well wasted

I love Scotland. For its whiskey, its myths, especially Nessie, the people and whenever I get the hang of the accent, their humour. The Poke, the biggest humour site in the UK, agrees and dedicated a picture gallery to the Scottish: “25 reasons why we love Scotland”. Ranging from the way they deal with neighbours and terrorists and my favourite the roadside weather report. Good craic!
