I always imagine the day the felines will rise against us when I hear the name Cat Power, but that’s just silly. So ignore me. Rather, focus on Cat Power the sultry singer/songwriter whose music has covered lots of ground over her 11-album career from dirty garage rock to Memphis soul, but all with deeply personal lyrics to reflect what’s been a pretty turbulent life. She plays live at Volkshaus tonight.

Summer may officially be here now but it seems that no one has told the damn weather, and this weekend offers no respite. So what do you do when the forces of nature conspire against you? Well, you go to the Slick ‘Summer Edition’ Party in Exil and simply live in denial. Dj Dynamite from Hamburg along with some fine local djs will be bringing the heat of a Caribbean dancehall direct to Zurich.

Jeff Mills is known as one of the pioneering techno djs from Detroit as well as having a reputation as one of the best. His dj sets are a whirlwind of kinetic energy as he plays his tunes using 4 cd decks, a drum machine and up to 70 records an hour. This isn’t a gig for the fainthearted. He plays at the Heaven & Hell (Himmel & Hölle) night at Pfingstweide on Saturday.

On a few Sunday evenings throughout the summer, Seebad Enge are putting on a series of gigs called Seebad Unplugged where some cool local bands get to show off their acoustic chops. This Sunday, The Calling Sirens are playing their Tom Waits/Link Wray inspired dirty blues and rock. Seebad Enge is a great venue for these types of intimate gigs. Add to that the lake view and the free entry, and you may have yourself a perfect Sunday evening.

How would experimental music sound played on experimental instruments? Beginning on Monday is Poolloop, the Festival for Experimental Instruments, a weeklong extravaganza of all things new and noisy. Over the 7 days there will be open workshops, a Night of the Instruments where all the built projects and performers get to stand on stage and blow our minds, as well as a silent movie night with live music. If you’ve ever had trouble learning an instrument, go here and invent a new one. Whose to say you’re playing it badly then?
Monday to Sunday, various times and locations

Every day, when I cycle through my usual street, I have to avoid a pothole. And almost daily I wonder – why doesn’t the city fix it? So I decided to let the city know. The council created an app and a website called Züri wie neu where you can add/upload things that need improving, such as potholes in the street. So today, I downloaded the app, took a picture of said pothole, uploaded it with a comment and now I wait – and I’m curious to see if it’ll actually get fixed.

Maybe it’s the waitress, who never gets an order wrong even though she remembers everything including special requests and drinks without taking a note. Maybe it’s the bright welcoming smile of the owner. Maybe it’s their food. Maybe it’s their non-existing website. Or maybe, it’s the charming round windows and the comfy leather sofas. Because to me, Gloria is glorious!

Browsing through the Poke’s website – time certainly well wasted – I came across the most unfortunate publishing layouts of our time. Looking at the first ones, I laughed and scrolled down, and laughed harder and harder while scrolling down further and further until I had tears in my eyes and had to hold my belly (so I couldn’t scroll down any further). Hilarious!
