Neil Halstead has been part of the UK music scene for a while now, first as part of Slowdive in the early 90's, then Mojave 3 and lately as a solo folk artist. This is English folk in the grand tradition of Nick Drake rather than of sea shanties, and is the type of halcyon music best listened to as you lay in the shade of a willow tree next to a babbling brook, as the summer breeze caresses your skin. Unless you’ve been dazzled blind by the late summer sunshine, i’m sure you’ve spotted that the Zurich Film Festival is starting tonight, and will run in all its glitzy glamour until the 6th October. Unsurprisingly, there’s a bunch of great movies to see, both new and old. I would suggest checking out the programme and booking seats soon, as they sell-out very quickly. Although I do have 3 x 2 tickets to give away for the UK film, One Chance, showing on Sunday. Around the festival there’s also chances to see some of the world’s best filmmakers, like Harvey Weinstein and Harrison Ford, give insights into their methods. GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN are a small performance theatre troupe from London who bring their strange new comedy show, Big Hits, to Rote Fabrik on Friday. This isn’t a show with a plot exactly, but begins with two women entering the stage, one dressed in a white fluffy bunny outfit, and expands from there. They say that the audience will learn self-improvement during the show. They also say they’re going to blast their hearts right out for you. These alone seem two good reasons to take the trip to see them.

Summer may be fading fast, but as with anything sweet we all like to take one last nibble before we have to put it away, and this Saturday you’ll get your chance. According to my weather elves, Saturday is going to be the warmest and sunniest of the week before sinking into a grey oblivion from Sunday onwards. As luck would have it, the guys at Universität Irchel are also holding their last open-air electronic party of the year on the same day. With a fine selection of local djs to keep you entertained, this could literally be the party to end the summer.

You might think spandex, long hair and glam-rock went out in the 80’s and quite frankly you’d be right, but no one, it seems, told King Zebra, who play at La Catrina on Tuesday. Fully embracing the spirit of Mötley Crüe and Poison these rockers are dragging the 80’s back to us like a particularly well-coiffed cat with a neon mouse. With their main reason for starting the band being to get more groupies than any other band and their debut album called Greatest Hits, I think their tongues are firmly lodged in their cheeks and by the looks of them, ladies, after the show their tongues could firmly be lodged in yours. Be careful now.

At Rimini you don’t find just summer pleasure and design markets. It also is a great place to hang out now that golden autumn has arrived with fondue. I usually try to wait until deep winter until my first fondue, but the variations at Rimini just sound too tempting. «Fädä Ziäh» goes into the fourth round with their cosy open air fondue. And from 1st October they’ll add tent and fondue chinoise (beef) to the list. I booked three tables for two people each for the season opening in the tent. Crowd funding is the latest trend when it comes to realizing dreams and projects. It took a while until the hype made it to Switzerland. But finally, 100-days.net also has an English page, where musicians, artists or you (!) can display a project to be funded by friends, acquaintances and other people that like your idea. So if you have a project up your sleeve for which you need some seed money publish it there and you get 100 days to raise the money. Have a look at the page and if you’re not that creative at the moment maybe another project catches your eye that you’d like to support. And yes, this is a bit of personal propaganda. Never one to say no to creativity I’m a little bit involved in the platform as well.

Nuts are supposed to boost the immune system. My favourite are walnuts but their hard shells more often crack me than I crack them. Honestly! But the cool nut crackers by Matthias Zschaler motivate me to give the hard nuts another go. And robots are supposed to make our human lives easier after all. No?

Urban Gardening has conquered our city and its rooftops for a while now. But Spanish landscape artist Marc Grañén takes it a step further. Together with the Grupo IRACO he intends to make every grey surface green. Including the roofs of cars and buses. Watch the making of on you tube.
