Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 10.10.2013: Art attack, snowboard market & bike return

Dear friends
As the sunlight fades and the birds head south, I also get the urge for going away. So for the next few weeks you sadly won’t be receiving my newsletter but, never fear, unlike those delinquent birds I will be returning on the 7th of November ready to wow you for the winter that lies ahead.
Give my love to the city, Ron

Concert: Moving on up

The Move-Ons are an unsigned band who are huge in their hometown of Brighton, England. They play sold out residences in clubs around the musically inclined seaside town and have won many battle of the band competitions. They seem ripe to burst into the major leagues, so seeing them play their melodic indie-rock at Bar Rossi tonight could be your chance to bag bragging rights of the ‘I saw them when…’ kind. Free entry.
Thursday 10 pm, Bar Rossi

Art attack

If modern and contemporary art floats your boat, then this weekend can certainly be considered a high tide for you. From Friday through to Sunday you have the choice of going to Art International , a contemporary art fair at Kongresshaus, where you’ll see painting, sculpture, graphics and photography by some great international artists. If your tastes are at a more street level, then One Truth have the grand opening of their gallery over the weekend. One Truth are a Zurich graffiti/street art collective whose work you’ll see around town and who also represent Switzerland at many international street art competitions.
Friday to Sunday 11 am – 8 pm, Art International, Kongresshaus
Friday to Sunday see link for times, One Truth, Bändlistrasse 29, 8004

Concert: Howling at the moon

The Zurich band Wolfman have had a pretty good 2013. Their first single, All is Random, won the M4Music song demo clinic and on Saturday, at Papiersaal , they have their debut CD release show and party. With a combination of electronica, pop and a good dose of melancholia this duo know how to wrap the autumn nights in a blanket of comforting sadness.
Saturday 9 pm, Papiersaal

Cinema: Matinee madness

If you’ve ever got your hands on a box set of a TV series, sat down to watch ‘just the one’ episode and found yourself, 5 episodes later, having to have someone forcibly tear you away from the screen, then Arthouse Uto have a devilish delight for you on Sunday afternoon. Top of the Lake is an acclaimed and Emmy nominated 6-part TV miniseries set in New Zealand that follows a female detective as she investigates the disappearance of a pregnant 12-year old girl. Arthouse Uto plans to show all 6 episodes in one sitting, with an hours break to catch your breath. I have 5 x 2 tickets to give away. E-mail me.
Sunday 1.30 pm, Arthouse Uto

Cinema: Philosophy of film

If the abundance of movies during the Zurich Film Festival got your cinephile juices flowing, you may be in the mood for the Tuesday night session at Corner College. They’ll be showing, with discussion afterwards, The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema . The documentary has renowned pop philosopher and psychoanalyst Slavoj Zizek taking a closer look at the deeper psychological meaning of films spanning the spectrum from Charlie Chaplain to The Matrix. If you’re a film junkie and believe the movies don’t necessarily give us what we desire, but tell us how to desire, this is the film school for you.
Tuesday 8 pm, Corner College, Kochstrasse 1, 8004

The days are getting shorter and on the bike you feel winter in the air. If you can barely wait for the slopes to open but still need to complete your snowboard gear then visit the Iceripper flea market in Oerlikon on Sunday 27th of October. There you'll find second-hand boards, shoes, clothes and anything else you're looking for, for a bargain. There are also some stalls with new goods, generally from last season. Make sure to get there early (not too early, it's winter time then!) as the goods are usually sold out fairly quickly. And it's cash only. Entry: 5 francs
Sunday 27th October, 12 pm, Messehalle 9, Zurich Oerlikon

Eating: El Lunchador

Patrick Häberlin is one of the forces behind La Catrina – the one and only Mexican bar in town and one of my favourite venues for concerts. He grew up in Mexico and because he missed the food, he opened his own restaurant El Luchador . A lovely venue where you don’t get your typical tex-mex, but fresh dishes with juicy meat stripes and sauces from mild to really, really hot. And while Mexican wrestlers watch over your shoulders, you can enjoy the food and the friendly service in peace.
El Lunchador, Konradstrasse 69, 8005. Opening hours: Monday to Thursday 11 am to 2.30 pm & 5 pm to midnight (kitchen open until 11.30 pm), Friday 11 am to 2.30 pm & 5 pm to 1 am, Saturday 5 pm to 1 am (kitchen Friday and Saturday until 10.30 pm

Good to know
I'm sure you're aware by now that I truly like Zurich. But I was shocked to read that 2‘800 bikes get stolen every year. Most of these shameful crimes happen in Kreis 3, 4 & 11. Awful! So far the procedure went as follows: Your bike isn’t where you left it. Because you don’t have a bike, everything takes much longer. So it takes you a few days to go to the police station to report your bike stolen. You answer various questions: Why didn’t you come immediately? Are you sure it was stolen? Are you sure you locked it? Such a hassle. But from now on, you’ll be able to report bike thefts online (under www.suisse-epolice.ch the page will be activated any day now). Take a picture of your bike, jot down the frame number and its colour and the chances of the police finding your bike increases greatly.
