Zurich (EN) : Zürich tanzt Special

«ZÜRICH TANZT» Special
Zurich’s dancing this weekend, all across the city from A - Alterszentrum Dorflinde to Z - Zurich University of the Arts. Because the program of the annual dance festival is so comprehensive that a listing in my weekly newsletter could not possibly cover all the pearls on offer, I have for you a separate Ron Orp's Mail issue with all my dance favourites.
Have fun and give my love to the city, Ron

Everyday robots
A mass of unassuming people moves through the city and suddenly breaks into continuously moving patterns that react to the environment and produce a surprising, undulating cityscape, as if controlled by a magic, hidden remote control. With such performances, «Remote Citizen»  has made a name for itself worldwide. If you also want to be remotely controlled by a benign choreographer (and who wouldn’t want to be?), then register here.
Friday from 6.30 pm to 7.30 pm, Saturday from 1 pm to 3 pm & Sunday from 1 pm to 3 pm

Watch me strip

The Calypso strip club in Niederdorf is as much part of the cityscape as the Grossmünster and the Limmat in that part of town. As young, innocent boys we would throw furtive glances at the photos in the windows and hurry on past. Even now, I have never dared enter it’s dark interior (I promise, mum), but this weekend I will cross the threshold. In « Watch Me Strip!» four artists from different disciplines including physical theatre, dance and the visual arts have each put a striptease performance together which will inevitably lead to nakedness.
Friday from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm & 10.30 pm to 11.30 pm, Saturday from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm & 10.30 pm to 11.30 pm and Sunday from 8 pm to 9 pm, Calypso, Niederdorfstrasse 60

Crash course

Before you go to one of the many dance events, it may be useful to go to one of the  dance crash courses  to learn or refresh your dance steps a little and to especially warm up those rusty joints. You might like a classic wedding dance, a tango or maybe even a tap dance? I personally would rather go a little exotic, with Indian temple dances, Balkan dances, architectural dance (no, I have no idea what that is), Voguing, Waacking (also no idea) or a Bollywood dance.  All crash courses can be found here.
From Saturday 11 am to Sunday 6 pm, various locations

Zurich on foot

Do you prefer to wear walking instead of dancing shoes? Then set off on one of the «Zurich Tanzt City Walks», where you’ll get to know the city from a new perspective. In the performance city walk «Zoo-rich» you'll meet some urban animal oddballs, in «Wahnsinnisch Urbanisch» you’ll let yourself be inspired by sounds, architectural forms and street scenes, in «Ça Marche!» walking will become a meditation as your steps are broken down into miniature movements. All City Walks can be found here.
Saturday & Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm, several start and entry locations

Dance cinema

Did you know that there is a swiss dance collection in Switzerland? And did you know that it’s in Zurich? So even when the whole town is in rhythmic motion, you can still be a part of the groove. Dance films are shown from Switzerland and the wider world, and it is just the perfect place to recover from a crash course, a city walk or from life in general. The program can be found here.
Saturday & Sunday 11 am to 6 pm swiss dance collection, Limmatstrasse 265

Window dance

If you should be somewhere near the Viadukt on Saturday, then keep an eye open for the shop windows. Rather than the usual mannequins, real people will be on display each giving little performances: Someone talks about dancing and audiences, a collective transforms stories into movements, a couple engage in a marathon-hug and you can listen to an interpretation of Japanese poetry collection Man'yo-Shu (with bass and dance).
Saturday from 2 pm to 5 pm, Viadukt, various shop windows

Democratic dancing

Folk dancing can be associated with prejudices and clichés. Do you need a costume to participate? Do you have to be a member of a dance group? What if I do not know the steps? No matter, says the Rote Fabrik, because folk dance is dance-based democracy. Participation is the learning and the joy comes from the collective! An event where you can meet and enjoy an exceptional evening in good company. All information can be found here.
Saturday from 5 pm, Rote Fabrik

Just do it

If you’re still not convinced about dancing in Zurich, then maybe this video helps. And if that does not help, then take a look into the program, it has something exciting for all children of the city, however old. All events can be found here.
