Stage: Listen without hearing

One of the prerequisites of being a dancer would seem to be the ability to hear the music you’re dancing to but with the production of Listen at Rote Fabrik, it goes to show what a hearist I really am.  To music played live by Fritz Hauser, a troupe of hearing and deaf dances will put on a delicately choreographed performance that, just like watching a blind tightrope walker, adds an extra level of awe to the amazement of just seeing the act itself.
Thursday, Friday & Saturday 8 pm, Rote Fabrik

Party: Two door club

Two Door Cinema Club are UK indie-rockists with a dance floor bent, as they weave their electric guitars through suitably electro beats, and have become quietly huge while doing so. They’ve now been invited over to Zurich by the two party labels Killer & In/Out to show another aspect of their dance floor skills, as djs in Hive this Friday. They’ll be supported by a stellar array of local djs who also know how to put the indie into dance.
Friday 11 pm, Hive

Festival: Free style

This weekend sees Europe’s biggest freestyle festival come to the shores of the lake as freestlye.ch plays host to some of the worlds best snowboarders, free skiers, mountain bikers and motocrossers. We may be less than an hour away from the Alps but, hell, who needs a geography lesson when you can build your own mountain, and cover it in snow, right here in town? They’ll also have skate parks, a labelworld, food, drink, live bands and djs just in case the excitement of watching death-defying leaps and twists starts to drag.  In town they also have a Riders Welcome Night party in Plaza on Friday and an After-Burner party at Härterei on Saturday. I have 1 x 2 tickets to give away for the freestyle festival. E-mail me.
Friday 11 pm, Plaza (Riders Welcome Night)
Saturday & Sunday from 11 am, Landiwiese ( freestyle festival)
Saturday 11 pm, Härterei (After-Burner Party)

Concert: Lucky charm

Depending on where you come from in the world, a black cat crossing your path can either bring with it good or bad luck, but by letting rapper/dj duo Gato Preto (black cat in Portuguese) cross your path on Saturday at Stall 6 one thing is for certain: however lucky you feel afterwards, you’ll have danced yourself silly. With their music containing elements of African breakbeat, Brazilian baile funk and European house they seem to have distilled global dance rhythms into one undeniable and unstoppable sound. They’ll be followed by a dj set from Tropical Continent Soundsystem who bring together electronic beats with Caribbean percussion. All in all, in these waning days of summer, a perfect chance to disappear into more exotic climes.
Saturday 10 pm, Stall 6

Event: Behind the scenes

This Saturday, some doors are wide open that are usually closed to the general public. Zurich University of the Arts: It’s been a long time since I visited Toni Areal, back then, the factory was filled with ateliers and spontaneous parties. Now, after many months (has it been years?) of renovation Toni Areal welcomes students. If your curious to see what the new campus looks like, head there this weekend. You find the full programme of guided tours and exhibitions on their website. Moods & Schiffbau: The theatres are reopening into a new season. In this spirit, jazz club Moods invites to music, dance and an artistic programme, while Schiffbau shows you where they create their beautiful sets and costumes. During the day, entry is for free. Have a look on their website to see what's going on when.
Saturday 10 am to 6 pm & Sunday 10 am to 4 pm, Toni Areal
Saturday 3 to 8 pm, Moods & Schiffbau

Concert: The boys are back

Traditional music can often sound just plain old sometimes, but when it’s played raw with intensity and sincerity then those dusty old ghosts start to look pretty vivid to me. The Hackensaw Boys play a brand of bluegrass and country that feels a lot like punk rock, in that it slaps you about the face (in a loving way) and makes you want to jump about. They may have band members called Pee Paw and The Kooky-Eyed Fox but these good ol’ country boys have also supported The Flaming Lips and Modest Mouse, as well as playing music festivals all over the world. They’ll be playing El Lokal on Sunday night.
Sunday 8.20 pm, El Lokal

Good to know: Election time

This weekend, the Swissies have a say on various matters, of those I believe that there are two thatcould matter to you: health insurance and housing in Zurich.  Health insurance: The initiative tackles the basic insurance, which covers the same services everywhere. The initiative believes that a public basic health insurance would lower the costs as no money is spend on attracting new clients. This cause is supported by the left while the liberal parties believe that private companies do a better job in keeping the costs down generally. Housing in Zurich: The second initiative only concerns the Canton of Zurich. Its plan: A fixed amount of lower-rent-apartments within large projects in return for a higher-density-building permission. As before, the left supports this, hoping for more affordable housing within town. The liberal opposition believes that additional regulations will lead to fewer projects generally. The decision is up to the majority as usual and you’ll find the results from Sunday (after the poll) in the Swiss press or on swissinfo.

Eating: The month with an R

Regarding mussels I’m only familar with one rule: You should only eat them in months that contain an R. So after a few r-less month, September has started and therefore Moules & Frites are back in town. I spotted them on Les Halles' menue yesterday and I'm informed that  Dani H. is also preparing his tiny kitchen. But the highlight each year is Seebad Enge. Where you usually go for a swim in summer – well, maybe not this summer – they set the tables and serve Moules & Frites right at the lake until 18 October.

Shopping tip: Here to stay

More or less one year ago, I told you about the pop-up-store at Idaplatz «Fein & Dein». They enjoyed their temporary stay and are back for good. As before they offer conserved organic goods from the summer harvest as well as beautiful vintage kitchen utensils. Additionally they also sell unique hand-made furniture and objects now.
Fein & Dein, Sihlfeldstrasse 57, 8003. Opening hours: Wednesday to Friday 1.30 to 7 pm, Saturday 1 to 7 pm

Ron’s Favourite Song

“Flags flappin’ in Manhattan, New Dorp New York, Gargoyles gargling oil”, yeah I don’t know either but New Dorp. New York by SBTRKT sure knows how to groove. Enjoy.
