Concert: Jingle jungle

Jungle originally came to prominence last year in a shroud of mystery. The UK duo, known only as J and T, would perform live at London’s underground venues deep in shadow and their increasingly viral video’s featured troops of breakdancers or synchronised roller-skaters rather than the band themselves. This was never going to last of course, and although Jungle’s cover is now somewhat blown, it’s the music that really matters. If you want party tunes with a funky soul, music that is both strikingly original yet still familiar, they’ll be playing at Komplex Klub tonight.
Thursday 8 pm, Komplex Klub

Exhibition: Design for life

In a world of mass production and consumption it’s always refreshing to find something that’s a little more unique and individual, which was one of the driving forces behind Blickfang’s inception. This weekend at Kongresshaus, Blickfang will once again bring designers and unique products from all over the world including fashion, jewellery, accessories and interior design together under one roof. They’ll also have fashion shows throughout the weekend as well as a special ‘locals’ section focusing on designers from Zurich.
Friday to Sunday from 11 am, Kongresshaus

Party: Bad babies

It’s good to know that the Zurich party label Les Enfants Terribles have finally matured into their own name by celebrating their 3rd anniversary this weekend at Frieda’s Büxe. As is often the case they’ve managed to lure in a few international djs including Jun Akimoto, who spends his time playing deep, dubby techno at Fuse clubs in London and Kyoto, while Dogukan Ires is usually based at the crossroads of East and West, Istanbul. Along with these two, there’ll also be a great selection of local djs to make this a party worth remembering. It’s good to know that age hasn’t made these enfants any less terrible.
Friday 11 pm, Frieda’s Büxe

Festival: Micro electro

If you’ve been to Bar Rossi before you’ll know it’s not the largest bar in the world, which makes the fact that they’re putting on an electronic music festival this Saturday all the more amazing, and in a nod to self-awareness they’re calling it the Liveset Micro-Festival. The doors open at 9 pm, with the artists playing live electronica into the early hours of Sunday morning. Dj Christian von Andern will be filling in the gaps and the whole event is completely free to get into.
Saturday 9 pm, Bar Rossi

Reading: All things, all at once

One of the main themes of the 20th Century seemed to be about reaching for the future; trying to move faster, communicate faster, gather information faster. Well, now the future has arrived in a stream of non-stop news, information and gossip and many people feel a little disorientated. The past and future don’t seem as important as what’s happening right now. Douglass Rushkoff’s book Present Shock: When Everything Happens Now explores this subject in an entertaining and thought-provoking way and will be discussed at Corner College’s Theory Tuesday evening. Some excerpts of the book can be downloaded, so that you can better participate in the discussion. All in English.
Tuesday 8 pm, Corner College, Kochstrasse 1, 8004

Eating: The colour of the sky

Maybe you already found the pretty new shop Azzurro at Weinbergstrasse. If not, there is no excuse now not to visit. Their theme is «pure pleasure» and as soon as you enter the shop you’ll understand why. The home-made soups, salads and sandwiches made my stomach rumble as soon as I entered the venue. This, as well as special lemonades and tapas is all for take-away between 11 am and 2 pm from Monday to Friday. On the right hand side you find special wines and liqueurs, antipasti, olive oil, honey and much more savoury and sweet treats. And if you’re hosting a party, they also offer a catering service. Pleasure all around.
Azzurro, Weinbergstrasse 95, 8006. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 9 am - 6.30 pm, Saturday 10 am - 3 pm

Good to know: What’s going on in Swiss politics

At the end of the month, another national election is coming up. This time there are three topics I believe might be of interest to you. 1. Ecopop: What sounds like a new music style is an initiative that wants to limit net immigration to 0.2% of the population growth in Switzerland. Which is similar to a freeze. This is too drastic for almost all parties (even SVP), so let’s hope for a strong no. 2. New tram line in Zurich: Tram 8 could extend its line over Hardbrücke connecting Kreis 4 and 5 if the public says yes to the budget. 3. Drunk tank: Zurich has a drunk tank, where the police are allowed to put you if you’re drunk (even when not driving). You’ll have to pick up the costs of 1,700 francs for the one night. This price tag is the basis for the ongoing discussion and the public’s vote will decide now whether to continue with the drunk tank or not. More: As usual swissinfo.ch offers background information in English and also explains the rest of the topics the Swiss will vote on on Sunday.

Shopping tip: Pretty Woman

Let’s stick to Kreis 6 this week. Right next to the Leonhard-Steps you find the organic beauty depot Pretty & Pure. A lovingly decorated venue with a large selection of natural cosmetic products that have never been near an animal for testing or contain animal products. A bit like a vegan beauty parlour. Their spa offers treatments and make-up and their lines are also for men and available in their online shop as well.
Pretty & Pure, Weinbergstrasse 25, 8006. Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday 11 am - 6.30 pm, Saturday 11 am - 4 pm

Web tip: Take a break

Everyone needs a break from time to time. If smoking is not an option and if you shot all the bubbles in your Bubbleshooter-Game, try Oh h1. The name is weirder than the game, which is addictive and great to play while listening to music or a boring conversation. Just try it yourself. It works similar to Takuzu or Binairo and the introduction explains all questions you might have.
