Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 15.1.2015: Film 'n' food, creation myth & Fjord furniture

Dear Friends

What better way to cure those January Blues this week than dreaming of the warm springtime and riding your brand-spanking new bike along the city streets to looks of jealous amazement. What’s that you say? You haven’t got a new bike, well my dear Ronster, you might have if you enter this week’s competition to win one of the amazing Create Bikes from Artgerecht Cycles. E-mail me by the end of Friday (16th) to enter.
Give my love to the city, Ron

Exhibition: Turtles all the way down

Of all the mysteries that toyed with mankind’s early imagination, it was the existence of the stars, moon and sun that seems to have had the deepest impact. How did they get there? Why are they there? And most importantly, what do they mean? The new exhibition at Museum Rietberg, Kosmos, explores how the world’s ancient civilizations have tried to answer these cosmological questions and the myriad creation myths that have grown out of them.
Thursday until 31st May, Tue – Sun 10 am – 5 pm, Wed 10 am – 8 pm, Museum Rietberg

Cinema: Film ’n’ food

Film ‘n’ Food. Movies ‘n’ munchies. Cinema ‘n’ snacks. Hell, it doesn’t matter what you call it, the idea of showing a film while serving related food is s good one. This Friday at Volkshaus they’ll be showing the beautifully photographed Indian film, Valley of Saints. Set on the picturesque Dal Lake in the troubled Kashmir region, it tells the story of two friends whose dreams of leaving to find a better life are disrupted when a military curfew is imposed. Along with the film you’ll be served Indian drinks and snacks, as well as cakes and coffee. The money collected from the evening will be given to the Helvetas Project in Asia. You’ll also need to register if you’d like to go.
Friday 6.30 pm, Volkshaus

Stage: Passion play

Silvia Tschui is a Zurich-born writer whose debut novel, Jakobs Ross, stood for weeks in the Swiss bestseller list. It tells the story of Elsie, a servant girl in 19th Century Switzerland, who dreams of escaping her hard and violent existence through her love and talent for music and singing. Although the tone of the book is couched in magical-realist language the story of Elsie is far from one of fairytale innocence. Theater Neumarkt have adapted the novel for the stage and will be performing the show for the next few weeks. The play, as with the novel, is in Züri-dialect but will have English overtitles.
Saturday until 28th February (not everyday), 8 pm, Theater Neumarkt

Concert: Heirs to the throne

It may have all been done before with The White Stripes or The Black Keys but, when it works, the streamline, almost Zen-like quality, of a band made up of just drums and guitar can add an excitement to the music that is lacking in more cumbersome 3 or 4 piece bands. UK based Royal Blood have stumbled on the alchemy that makes their songs greater than their minimal parts, in this case drums and a bass guitar. They rock hard, for sure, but never forget that a pop melody or riff will raise them out of the heavy metal sludge. They play at Komplex 457 on Saturday.
Saturday 7 pm, Komplex 457

Sport: Not bored games

Board games at Christmas time are not only good for allowing you to spend extra hours with your family without having to actually converse with them, they can also be a lot of fun to play. If you’ve got the urge to play more of them but can’t wait until next Christmas comes around, then the Spielrausch at Hive Club is just for you. As this is their first evening of the year they’ll be focusing on Swiss games, although all nationalities are welcome along. They’ll also be serving food and music, as man cannot live on games alone.
Wednesday 7.30 pm, Hive Club

Eating: French garden

Gartenhof is one of my favourite places to eat out in Zurich. It’s got a great staff, great food and, as the name suggests, a great little garden courtyard to relax in. Although the garden may not be much use during January, they are tempting us with a little extra oh-la-la to get us to come. Until the end of the month they’ll be offering the best of French cuisine, whether that be moules, entrecote, chèvre chaud, bouillabaisse, oysters or crepes. The wine will be optional but, as the old saying goes, when in Zurich pretending to be French, do as the French do.
Gartenhof, Gartenhofstrasse 1, 8004

Shopping tip: Fjord Möbel

If all you know about Nordic furniture design is IKEA, then you should get yourself down to Fjord Möbel. They’ll be opening their doors for the first time on Friday, and will only be with us for five months, but while they’re here they’ll be selling antique and vintage furniture as well as prints and accessories for your home, all with that simplicity of design that our Northern brethren are known for.
Fjord Möbel, Predigerplatz 42, 8001

Cityscribe: The Baroness Speaks

This week is the first outing for a new Cityscribe i've met around town called The Baroness. She has her own take on life, which she'll be more than happy to share with you. She'd also like to hear from you, if you have any questions or queries you'd like to pose to her, about pretty much anything really. Seeing as it's January, her first piece is about New Year resolutions.

The Baroness Speaks
Why do you people make resolutions on January 1st each year? I don’t understand it. Well, I do. Of course I do literally, but really, I don’t understand. Why set yourself up to fail? Because that’s what you will do. That’s what happens each year. Walk with me:

Web tip: Litefeet

In March of 2014 the NYPD started to crack down on the hip-hop dancers and performers who have become synonymous with a ride on the New York subway system. Before the month was out, arrests had tripled what they had been the entire previous year. This short documentary by Scott Carthy called Litefeet meets some of the dancers and shows their side of the story. View here.
