Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 30.4.2015: Pirate radio, sports day & open cellars

Zurich Photo Trip → City Talk

Party: Pirate of the airwaves

If you’re tired of listening to the same five songs on repeat via commercial radio or the idea of Top 40 radio sends a shiver down your spine, then you should be twiddling your internet radio dial to piratenradio.ch, the Swiss indie radio station that streams the music playlists of your dreams. This Thursday they are celebrating their 5th birthday at Kinski with a great band line-up made up of the raw power of Roy & The Devil’s Motorcycle, the Americana Jack White-ness of the Tobey Lucas Band and the dirty rock’n’roll of The Come n’ Go. The afterparty is being manfully handled by dj’s Rocketaro and El Miguel.

Thursday 8 pm, Kinski

Exhibition: Best press

Every year, since 2002, the best of Swiss press photography has been exhibited at Landesmuseum. This year’s exhibition runs until the 5th July. I always like to attend the Swiss Press Photo; it gives me the chance to reflect on the past, on the positive and negative topics that shaped the last year. At the same time, the quality of the photos, freezing a fleeting moment in time, never ceases to impress me. I like the location at Landesmuseum as it gives me time to wander the park or along the river afterwards to dwell before returning to the present and facing the future.

Thursday until 5 th July, Tuesday to Sunday 10 am to 5 pm, Thursday 10 am to 7 pm, Landesmuseum

Festival: Ronsters of the world, unite

This Friday is May Day, also known as International Workers Day, so if you’d like to take to the streets to taunt The Man while avoiding any overt rioting then head down to Kasernenareal over the weekend. Along with some information stands for those looking for a weekend of politicking, they’ll also have an international array of food and drink stalls, a kids corner and live bands playing all kinds of music including folk, rock, hip-hop and reggae.

Friday 12pm to 12 am, Saturday 12 pm to 2 am, Sunday 12 pm to 10 pm, Kasernenareal

Concert: Country got soul

The first thing you’ll notice about Matthew E White is that he looks like a plump Jesus with cooler looking shades, the next is that his music has the easy groove of a man who has captured the soul sounds of Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder and then released them back into the wild having twisted them into new country tinged shapes. His new album, Fresh Blood, was released a few weeks ago and seems to be getting lots of love from all over. He’ll be playing at Stall 6 on Saturday night.

Saturday 8.30 pm , Stall 6

Sport: Sports day

I’ll always remember Sports Day’s at school. My Sack Race technique was the talk of the playground, not to mention the way I could become as one with the Egg ‘n’ Spoon. On Sunday at Sihlhölzli Sportanlage, Fitnessholiday will be holding their first ever Sports Day for Adults. Whilst there will be a couple of proper sporting events such as sack racing taking place on the lawn you’ll also have the chance to take part in, or try out, many other non-competitive events throughout the day including Yoga, Pilates, Shake Your Bum Bum, CrossFit and Fit & Funky. Food and drinks by Martha’s Salad and Heylife’s cold pressed juices will also be available.

Sunday 9 am to 3 pm, Sihlhölzli Sportanlage, Manessestrasse 1, 8003

Ikoo (formerly known as Ooki) has a new sibling: Miki. The new location is slightly more elegant and a little bit bigger. There are different seating areas, one straight at the kitchen bar, where you can watch the chefs à la Japanese. Whenever it’s warm enough, you can also sit outside. The card is similar to Ikoo: various wonderful soups and other Japanese delicacies.

Good to know: Local wine → Good to know

First of May is generally associated with demonstrations (or in Zurich’s case, demonstrations that turn violent). However, the wine-makers also chose that date to host their day of open wine cellars. Maybe in the hope to soften the rioters with the juice that drunken dreams are made off. Either way, if you’re interested in regional wines, there is certainly a lot to discover on that day: wonderful reds, beautiful whites, some sparkles as well as venues you never set foot in so far. Such as the local wine yard where you can test Zurich wine or the vinothek of Winzerei zur Metzg whose deep red wines will blow your mind. If you don’t have time for the wine tasting this Friday, the website provides you with a list of local wine-makers for the future.
