Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 27.8.2015: Art party, other street parade & off-line bbq

Dear friends

Pssst, I'm back!..I hope you didn't miss me too much. I thought about you everyday and the things we could do together when i returned from my travels. As a small token of my love, here's a newsletter with some of the things happening in town this week where we're bound to bump into each other. Until then...
Give my love to the city, Ron

Pop-up: Thai rope trick

If, like me, you’ve never knowingly seen a rope factory before, what would you say it looked like? The joke answer, of course, would be ‘long and thin’ but this is also the reality, as you’ll be able to confirm if you go to the Soi Thai Pop-Up Streetfood and Bar. They’ve taken over an old wooden rope factory on the Rämistrasse hillside for the next few weeks and have transformed it into a Thai paradise. You’ll be able to enjoy fresh cooked Thai streetfood, a bar serving beers and some great Thai-themed cocktails, Nitrogen ice cream (don’t ask me, just try it!) and all wrapped up with music from a selection of great local djs.
Thursday until 13th September, Mon – Fri 11.30 am to 2 pm, 5.30 pm to 11.30 pm, Sat 5 pm to 11.30 pm, Sun 2 pm to 8 pm, Rämistrasse 24, 8001

Party: Straight outta Zurich

Straight outta Zurich, crazy motherflumper named Ron Orp... If those words ring some kind of vague bell to you, then you’re probably aware that the N.W.A. biopic, Straight Outta Compton, has its theatrical release today in Zurich. To tie in with this, Stall 6 are having a Tribute to N.W.A. event tonight, where djs Malik, Sterneis, Supreme and Mono will be playing tunes from the West Coast original gangsta crew and its members, from their beginnings through to today.
Thursday 9 pm, Stall 6

Party: Art party

This Friday sees the beginning of a couple things for Löwenbräukunst at the Kunsthalle. Firstly, they have a two new exhibitions opening – one from Pauline Boudry & Renate Lorenz, a Swiss/German performance duo who produce film installations that re-examine historical artistic moments and the other from Loretta Fahrenholz, a German film maker who uses various film genres to create unconventional portraits of small communities. The other thing happening at Kunsthalle on Friday is the beginning of their art season. This is being celebrated with the Löwenbräu Summer Party. They’ll have plenty to eat and drink plus music will be supplied by Martin Creed & His Band, a UK Turner Prize winning artist in his own right and djs Condor and Kejeblos.
Friday 6 pm, Kunsthalle, Limmatstrasse 270, 8005

Party: The other street parade

This weekend is full of festivals and parades of one sort or another, and spanning the entire time from Friday to Sunday is Lethargy at Rote Fabrik. Often billed as the alternative alternative to the Street Parade, they make sure they cram as many live bands, djs and performance pieces into three days and nights that the name Lethargy seems to mock the very idea of the English language. As a refuge from, and an extension of, the Street Parade, Sunday will be an open air and free affair. I have 1x2 tickets to give away for Friday and Saturday. Email me, letting me know which of the days you’d like the tickets for.
Friday 10 pm-8.30 am, Saturday 10 pm-7 am, Sunday 1 pm-9pm, Rote Fabrik

Eating: Food, glorious food

Call me psychic but I have a feeling that from the fact that I’ve been away for a few weeks and you’re still here, reading this, that you’ve been eating something in my absence. Food is kind of one of those important aspects of life that we often overlook when it comes to its nutritional value and, especially, its sustainability. Well, for the month of September the city is giving us a chance to redeem our unhealthy lifestyles with a number of events, workshops, pop-up restaurants and movies all under the umbrella name of Zurich Isst (Zurich Eats). Check out the website to get more information on the individual events but some that have caught my eye include a Street Food Festival in Enge, a vegan shopping tour of Zurich, an insect eating evening and the Films for the Earth festival at Volkshaus.
Tuesday until 30th September, various events and locations throughout town

Concert: Better late than never

Back at the beginning of July I told you about a concert by FFS, the supergroup hybrid formed by indie-rockers Franz Ferdinand and art-poppers Sparks. Well, those cheeky chappies cancelled that particular concert and left us all hanging. They’ve now had enough time to consider the error of their ways and will be back at X-tra on Wednesday for their postponed debut in Zurich, and i have 2x2 tickets to give away. Send me an e-mail if you’d like a chance to win (again).
Wednesday 7.30 pm, X-tra

Shopping tip: The one and only

Travelling was great. But surprisingly, I began to miss – next to you, of course! – those little bags you wear on your back. Yes, I know it’s very hipstery but they’re just so practical. Mine broke after the first week and for the life of me, I couldn’t find a replacement. However, after my return, the first venue I head to in Zurich stocked some flyers on the bar featuring Natascha’s bags, just the ones I’ve been looking for all this time. Thank you Zurich, thank you Natascha! Home is a place that reads your mind.

Good to know: bbq in the city

Summer is really full on this year and I look forward to another hot weekend. If you’re like me, you don’t tire of bbqs but a change of scenery would be nice. Type in your address into the search bar at Grillstelle.ch and it lists all fireplaces in your area. If you click on the ones you like, you also find some commentary as well as a selection of the best rated places. With the fire ban banned, there is nothing stopping you. And with street parade going on, there is a good chance that you’ll have the fireplace all to yourself. In theory, the page offers a «check-in» function but I’m certain that there will always be visitors, who won’t do that. Long live off-line bbq fun.

Web tip: Drinkable book

We’re lucky to have plenty of drinking water. But of course, there are many places where clean water is scarce. An American scientist developed a simple but efficient method to purify water. And for us urban geeks it even comes in a cool design. She added silver and copper to paper and turned it into a book. You can just rip out a page and form it into a water filter. I’d say: print - 1, e-reader - Nil.

Ron’s video gem: 1. Streetparade

In honour of this weekend’s programme: a video of the first Streetparade in Zurich. In 1992 it looked a bit different…

Cityscribe: The Baroness Speaks of Love

Hello Darlings!

I’m back and refreshed and looking better than ever! (Photographic proof next week, promise).

While I was off doing unmentionable things with illustrious individuals, I was so pleased to get so many letters from you. What I’m most surprised about is the content. While several of you asked about sex, drugs and retirement plans, more, many more, of you had questions about love.

Ahhh, love. I’ll get to your letters over the coming weeks, but here’s the one I chose to start with:

Dear Baroness,

I am devastated. And embarrassed. And just sad. I have this situation. I have a mad crush on a guy and I finally told him. Of course I knew in my heart of hearts that he's not crushing back on me, but I couldn't help myself. And now I feel rotten. And pathetic. Is there anything I can do to feel less awful?
