Cinema: City of angels

'There are eight million stories in the naked city' may have been a quote about New York but it also sums up New York’s twisted, twitchy cousin on the West coast: Los Angeles. Stories abound in the City of Angels and filmmakers have always been attracted to them, as well as the ‘edge of the world’ atmosphere of the place. At Xenix, for the month of September, they have a Lost in L.A. season that will be showing some of the best movies to have come out of the city. They have 22 movies showing in total which include Chinatown, Drive, Boyz n the Hood and the grandaddy of all blaxploitation films Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song.
Thursday until 30th September, various times, Xenix

Festival: Underneath the arches

The little community of shops and restaurants that live beneath the arches at Im Viadukt have got together this Friday to organise another one of their Viadukt Nights for us, and this year they’ll be celebrating their 5th anniversary. As well as all the shops being open, the Markthalle and surrounding stalls will serve everything from tapas to teriyaki, via a 50’s surf bar and craft beers. There'll also be a bartender show, free salsa dancing lessons, a light and projection show as well as a firework display and much much more (as they say). And if that wasn't enough for you restless Ronsters, they'll have plenty of bands and djs playing live in and around the shops.
Friday 2 pm until 2 am, Im Viadukt

Exhibition: Night at the museum

It's Die Lange Nacht Der Zürcher Museen (Long Night of the Zurich Museums) this Saturday, when 47 of the city's museums and special buildings will be keeping their doors open throughout the night. With a combined ticket for Fr. 25 you'll get admission to all the museums, free rides on the city's busses and trams, use the MS Sentosa boat to get around the lake to the museums and free bike hire. Most of the museums will be putting on some extra special events as well including live music, children’s events and films. For full programme, see here.
Saturday 7 pm until 2 am, citywide

Festival: Green growth

Zurich West has probably been the fastest developing area of Zurich for some time now, and with all the shiny new apartment and office blocks being built you might stop to wonder about the absence of green spaces amongst all of the steel and progress. Well, wonder no more, you delicate little Ronster, as a new city park is being opened on Saturday. The Pfingstweidpark is an 18,000-m2 park in the middle of the former industrial district and the opening party will include food from local restaurants, tango dancing, children’s entertainment, a ping-pong tournament and live music from some pretty good local bands.
Saturday 1.30 pm until 7.30 pm, Pfingstweidpark, Pfingstweidstrase

Party: Beat of the drum

The Drumpoet Community is a Zurich based record label whose focus and philosophy is about the art, the artist and musical freedom. Given these factors as a guiding principal they’ve managed to snag an eclectic and talented mix of electronic djs, producers and musicians into their circle. This Saturday at Zukunft is being given over as a showcase for some of Drumpoet’s flagship artists to play live. Irishman John Daly, Washerman and Pacifica all create their own unique sounds and vision of what a night of clubbing should feel like, and on Saturday you’re going to get it on full blast.
Saturday 11 pm, Zukunft

Eating: Oldie but goody - Café Zähringer

A new restaurant opening in town can be an exciting event but what about the ones that have been around a while, the ones that have become so part of the landscape we sometimes forget about them? Well, Café Zähringer has certainly been around a while – 34 years in fact, and yet despite this, it is still a vibrant place to meet and eat, especially outdoors watching the world go by. The food (seasonal soups, daily specials, pasta, salads, sandwiches, cakes) is simple, well cooked and sourced sustainably and locally. The staff has equal ownership in the place, which means they really care what happens there and share in the responsibility and profit of owning a restaurant.
Café Zähringer, Zähringerplatz 11, 800

Good to know: Farmer Guide

Would you like your food to come directly from the farmers, or do you prefer it to take that mysterious and ever costly journey from distant lands? That was a rhetorical question, of course. Being a Ronster I know you only want the best. The mobile app Farmer Guide includes an extensive directory of farms, vintners and producers of agriculturally sustainable products that directly sell their products. It’s also an ideal companion for your next trip to the countryside. The app is available for both iPhones, and Android devices.

Shopping tip: Pop up

Pillows, baskets, clothes, accessories and a lot of sunlight: In Tanja's Pop Up Shop you’ll find unique handmade pieces from the warmth of Algeria that will make the summer last a little longer. The place is only there until the end of the month, so grab the summer while you still can.

Ron’s video gem: Dismaland – Bemusement park

Oh Banksy, why is it that you taunt us so? Not being content to mock modern society on the sides of buildings with his street art, Banksy has decided to build a huge temporary art project called Dismaland in an English seaside town that may, or may not, (depending on Mickey Mouse’s lawyers) be a satirical slap in the face to the soulless corporatism of Disneyland. Banksy has enlisted the help of other like-minded artists, and you can see the fruits of their labour here.
