Ron Like Day

Dear friends, the 17th September is internationally known as Ron Like Day. While larger parades take place in South East Asia, you only have to click the like button on Facebook in this country. Maybe you also want to tell your friends about it and have a little dance. Either way, Happy Ron Like Day!

Party: Community of friction

After their summer break, it’s the season opening of the continuing collaboration between Gessnerallee, Stall 6 and the performance collective Friction this Thursday evening. For the opening night you can see a couple of bands for free (Trio Heinz Herbert and Len Sander), a new dance performance with the great name The Ghost of Montpellier Meets the Samurai, and go to the after-party with djs Anuschka and Hunter Trouble Danger. Every following Thursday they will also put together some weekly community happenings under the banner ‘Today is a ______ Day’ which will include workshops, panel discussions, one-day exhibitions, yoga, movie nights, concerts and dance. Watch this space.
Thursday from 6.30 pm, Gessnerallee

Project: Parking space, the final frontier

Reclaiming the city, one parking spot at a time. This is the mantra of Park(ing) Day, an annual global event that temporarily transforms metered parking spaces into public spaces and art installations. Once you’ve put your money in a parking meter, you have essentially leased that spot for your own use for a limited time. In the past people have planted temporary urban farms, produced ecology demonstrations, held political seminars, built art installations, opened free bike repair shops and even held a wedding ceremony. It now happens in 162 cities worldwide and will be taking place in Zurich on Friday, with around 20 places at Bullingerplatz being reclaimed and reimagined.
Friday 4 pm, Bullingerplatz

Reading: Bad boy

Martin Amis has seemingly been called the ‘bad boy’ of British literature since he first came to prominence in the 1970’s, and even though he is regarded as one of the finest writers of the modern era, and is now a grandfather, that bad boy image and name have managed to stick to him throughout it all, for which he seems to veer between not caring at all and having a certain wry pride in. In his new book, The Zone of Interest, he writes about a controversial subject he has explored in previous novels: the Holocaust. He’ll be reading extracts as well as discussing the book and life at Kaufleuten on Tuesday.
Tuesday 8 pm, Kaufleuten

Stage: Weird and wonderful

If you were to imagine a filmmaker who has explored the depths of filth and debauchery, and pushed the boundaries of taste in his movies with drugs, homosexuality, religion and abortion, then John Waters may not be your first suspect in a police line-up. With his hair slicked back, suit and ever-present pencil moustache you could easily be forgiven for thinking he’s the accountant on a film set rather than the visionary writer and director. Until the 1st November, Kunsthaus will be showing an exhibition of another side of John’s talent called How Much Can You Take, which showcases a collection of his film storyboards, photographs and three-dimensional art. While on Wednesday you have the chance to be fully embraced by the world of Waters as he performs his one-man show, This Filthy World, also at the Kunsthaus.
Wednesday 7 pm, Kunsthaus (This Filthy World)
Until 1st November, Kunsthaus (How Much Can You Take)

Concert: So good they named it twice

As all of musical history becomes available to us to listen to instantaneously at the click of a button, the idea of bands being influenced by, or raging against, what came directly before them has become kind of quaint and outdated. If you want to have a psychedelic vibe rubbing up against some electronic beats, while surf guitars rattle in the background, then why not? – that’s how music is listened to these days. Django Django are a UK band who have heard the future and are combining all these elements and more into songs that sound like pop music for the restless of ear. They’ll be playing live at Rote Fabrik on Wednesday.
Wednesday 8 pm, Rote Fabrik

Eating: Outside the norm

Good old Henri doesn’t mind if cucumbers aren’t straight or if carrots sprout more than one 'leg'. On the contrary, he uses vegetables that would end up as waste as they don’t meet supermarket norms to create tasty take-away dishes. These are sold in reusable preserving jars straight from the food-bike which you find from 11.30 am to 1.30 pm in front of Bachsermärt at Kalkbreite or the International Beer Bar next to RiffRaff. If you'd like to try it out, I have 2x2 lunch meals to give away for free. Just send me an e-mail.
Zum guten Heinrich, Bachsermärt, Badenerstrasse 171, 8003 & International Beer Bar, Luisenstrasse 7, 8005. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 11.30 am to 1.30 pm

Good to know: Hibernating pools

Although the sun shines golden upon Zurich, the days of swimming are numbered. Primitivo and Panama at Obere Letten and Untere Letten have already closed. Utoquai will do the same on the 27th September, Frauenbadi have their season finale this Saturday… But there are two that don’t give up. Seebad Enge: The sauna winter season starts this Saturday on the 'women’s side' while on the 'mixed' deck (which is on the right looking from the shore) offer their traditional Moules et Frites from today until the middle of October. Rimini: The men’s pool slogan is 'in summer we trust' which is why they extend the season with a Fondue hut. Starting from today, they’ll serve the typical Swiss dish in 5 variations for 39 francs per person daily until 17th October.

Shopping tip: The Barber Paradox

High up North, in the tropical South as well as in the fast East: Traditional barber shops experience an international comeback. Today’s men of the world appreciate their facial hair cut by a professional. If you’re one of them, the staff of The Barber Paradox are of the old school, surrounded by original gadgets and large mirrors. And it’s a manly place, they bring you beer instead of the usual coffee, if you like. Which i'm sure you do.
The Barber Paradox, Rennweg 32/34, 8001

Ron’s video gem: Surfing in Thaiti

Brent Bielmann and Eric Sterman spent a few weeks in Tahiti during the season’s best run of swell. Their drone caught angles of surfing you’ve never seen before. It focuses on small details but also brings wonderful overviews. My tipp: Click on the short, take a break, and let the music carry you to the ocean for 4 minutes.
