Exhibition: Back to the future

Forget Nostradamus,if anyone was able to predict the future it was Andy Warhol. In one line, - ‘Everyone will be world famous for 15 minutes’ - he predicted the rise of social media, reality tv and celebrity culture, perhaps the dominant forces in 21st century culture. While Warhol had his eyes set firmly on the future, a new exhibition at Graphische Sammlung der ETH called Andy Warhol – The Life Years looks distinctly to his past. In 2011, an extensive collection of his early drawings and prints were discovered that date to the 1950’s, long before his pop-art pinnacle, and give an insight into the creative birth and development of one of the 20th century’s greatest artists. The exhibition will be showing a large collection of these works as well as the source materials, such as magazines and photographs.
Thursday to 23rd December 10 am to 4.45 pm, Graphische Sammlung der ETH, Rämistrasse 101, 8092

Stage: Alone again, naturally

Kim Noble is an award-winning performance and video artist from England who also happens to be an award-winning comedian, and his one-man show You're Not Alone comes to Gessenerallee over the weekend. In You're Not Alone, Kim documents his attempts to unburden himself from the isolation that modern society can create and to connect himself to something real and authentic. In the case of the slightly provocative Mr Noble this would include documenting his neighbours sex lives or calling phone numbers found in motorway service station toilets. No one said embracing the world would be easy, so why not give it the sloppiest bear hug you can.
Friday to Sunday 8 pm, Gessnerallee

Project: City of dreams

Have you ever heard of Fabribraland? It’s a city-state set on an archipelago of ten islands, has around 12,000 residents, some famous, some not; it’s a place for social experiment, personal dream fulfilment, and doesn’t really exist. Fabribraland is a virtual city and only exists in maps and plans that Adrian Germann has drawn since childhood, although since 2009 it has turned into more of a real world art project with events, happenings, performances and exhibitions. Over the weekend the 2nd Grand Prix de Fabribra is taking place. A 1:25 scale model of Fabribra has been built, 32 racing teams made up of institutions, companies and individuals will be taking part racing custom designed RC cars through the streets. Awards will be given for Fastest Driver, Most Beautiful Car and Best Team Outfit.
Friday 6 pm to 10 pm (Opening with guided tour), Saturday 12 pm to 5 pm (Grand Prix de Fabribra & prize giving), Dienstgebäude Art Space, Töpferstrasse 26, 8045

Concert: Hip hop progress

Blackalicious are a Californian hip hop duo that mine the progressive or alternative seam of hip hop that avoids the gangsta clichés and instead focuses on a more mellow, philosophical, often Afrocentric view of the world. Bands like De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest were the forefathers in the late 80’s, and with Blackalicious that spirit has been transplanted into the 21st century. Blackalicious rapper Gift of Gab and producer/dj Chief Xcel will be playing live at Stall 6 on Saturday for the release of their new album, Imani Vol.1. The afterparty will be handled by Wefunk radio djs and Soulsonic.
Saturday 10 pm, Stall 6

Shopping tip: Pop out to the pop up

There’s a new design and lifestyle Pop-Up Market opening at the MAAG Eventhalle on Saturday. Now, I know what you’re thinking – ‘Aren’t all markets, by their very nature, pop-up?’ And to that I would answer, ‘Stop thinking so much, relax, and let me get on with telling you about it’. The types of stalls that will be appearing are the kind of designers, labels and brands that have the characteristics of a pop-up store. They offer cool, unique products including men's and women’s fashion, accessories, vintage gear and furniture; are often found selling their wares in niche corners of the internet; and give you the opportunity to express your inner bohemian without diving headfirst into a pool of Absinth.
Saturday 12 pm to 7 pm, MAAG Eventhalle

Concert: Opposites attract

New York duo MS MR are back with a new album that continues their exploration of electro pop with a shiny 80’s neon hue. The ‘MS’ half of the band name is Lizzy Plapinger, whose lyrics and voice add introspection and calm to their sound while ‘MR’, who’s called Max Hershenow, handles the music and production with all the sparkle and energy of a disco dancing firework. They’ll be playing live at X-tra on Monday and I have 2 x 2 tickets to give away. Email me.
Monday 8 pm, X-tra

Good to know: Keep the summer spirit

Maybe you’ve seen people doing yoga on the lake – SUP yoga – this summer. Or maybe you’ve been on the water yourself and tried a hero position on the board. But when it gets cold, even the bravest heroes have to give up. Interior architect Mabel Eugster came up with the great idea to design boards which can be used indoors too. The Lago Mio Boards strengthen muscles while increasing their flexibility at the same time. The group-work-out takes place every Tuesday. So get going until the sun comes back for sure.
Tuesday 7 pm to 8.30 pm, SUP Yoga Ottenweg 35, 8008

Drinking: Cocktails for all

Usually, Brian, Steven and Bernardo serve their cocktails at private and corporate events. Therefore only a select handful of people were able to taste their unique creations such as cinnamon kiss or cucumber cooler or one of their recreated classics. Finally, the three performing bar keepers realized how unfair it was to keep this from the public and, so, we're all invited to the opening party this Thursday at their brand new Montblack bar in Zurich from 5 pm. Cheers!
Montblack Cocktail Bar, Elisabethenstrasse 28, 8004

Web tip: Beloved bread

I appreciate sandwiches, I really do. But it never crossed my mind to focus my life around them. Unlike Jon Chonko who loves, loves, loves sandwiches. He loves to eat them. He loves to make them himself. He loves to order them at restaurants. He loves to take pictures of them. Clicking through his Scanwiches Project I wish my lunch sandwich had looked just faintly as good as the ones he tested.

Ron’s video gem: Step into the page

« Step into the Page» shows a discussion between The Future of Storytelling and the animation artist Glen Keane about art, new technologies and life, while he is painting «Ariel» and «Beauty and the Beast» with tilt-brush and special virtual reality glasses. Pretty surreal.
