Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 14.1.2016: Free flights, fight club & stay out of jail

Dear friends

I love Zurich. You love Zurich. Hell, that’s why I write, and you read this stuff, but we all know, whisper it and don’t tell your significant other, that absence does make the heart grow fonder. That’s why for this week’s January give-away I’m offering you SWISS flights to a European destination of your choice. Send me an E-mail and, if you win, we’ll figure out the finer points of where and when you’d like to go.
Give my love to the city, Ron

School of rock → Live (concerts)

As Alice Cooper never sang, ‘ School’s out for winter’. It’s the end of the semester at ZHdK (Zurich’s School of the Arts) and the pop and jazz students want to show you everything they’ve learnt about the business called show. The Output Festival will showcase 40 bands made up of ZHdK students, each with their own diverse style and vision, from the Clash City Rockers, exploring the musical universe of The Clash, to Get Discotized, playing dance music from Gloria Gayner to Daft Punk, to Pop History, travelling through 40 years of classic pop music. Friday also has an indie rock dj set called Indie Bites. Entry to all concerts and shows is free.
Thursday 8 pm to 11.30pm, Friday 8 pm to 5 am, Saturday 8 pm to 4 am, ZHdK Mehrspur

Irish bears

Irishmen John Kowalski and Rian Trench have come together under the name Solar Bears to produce music that slips and slides between feather light electronica, new wave synth-pop and deep house. Add to this a smattering of old French and Sci-Fi movie soundtrack samples and you have music that feels simultaneously nostalgic and futuristic. Their third album, Advancement, comes out in the spring but to whet our appetites they’ll be playing a live show at Zukunft on Friday night. Djs Jauss, Jacks Taco and Siegwart will be on hand to ease you through the rest of the night.
Friday 12 am, Zukunft

Slow food → Gastro-Events

If you get that nagging feeling in January that you may have eaten too much of the bad stuff and spent too much of the good stuff over the previous weeks then the folks at Slow Food Youth are here to ease your troubled mind, not to mention your waistband and wallet. On Saturday evening they are organising a January Eat-In at the artists studio Albizke where everyone sits together at a long table and eats food prepared with the Slow Food philosophy of ‘good, clean and fair’ in mind. The entry price to the event is that you prepare and bring along a home-cooked meal (for 2-3 people), as will everyone else in attendance. It could be your favourite dish, vegetables from local farmers or just something you’ve rustled up out of your fridge. The point being that, even with little money, we can feast on healthy sustainable food and feel a little better about our wayward Christmas habits.
Saturday 6.30 pm, Albizke, Albisriederstrasse 203b 8047

All together now

It’s been four years since three Zurich friends came together to create Miteinander Musik, a record label designed to bring to the world’s attention the electronic music emanating from our fair city. To celebrate this anniversary they’ll be doing what you would expect a record label known for its crazy parties to do – throw a crazy party. As well as a line-up including plenty of their own artists and djs, they’ve also made room for some interlopers, with live performances from Wide Awake and Niju and dj sets from London’s Mr Beatnick and Germany’s Christopher Rau and Ninze & Okaxy. Don’t worry if you think that’s a lot of music to squeeze into a night as the party will be going from Saturday through to Sunday evening. They’ve promised three floors of dance, raclette and lots of surprises.
Saturday 11 pm to Sunday 10 pm, Hive

Fight club → Parties

Photobastei have an event on this Saturday called Boxing Techno Popcorn. This isn’t just some artful Dadaist wordplay of a name; they are literally having a party that has boxing, techno and popcorn. The boxing will involve 10 live fights between male and female boxers and kickboxers from the Fairplay Studios in Zurich. So that our soft artistic sensibilities aren’t too offended by the brutality, the fighting will be interspersed with video installations, film projections and photographs from 4 artists showcasing the grace of this noble profession. The techno will be provided by 7 djs including Matija from Hive and the Turntable Babes crew. And, last but by no means least, popcorn will be on hand for the hungry.
Saturday 8 pm, Photobastei

Eating: Postgarage - a piece of history → Newly opened/pop up stores

In one of the old postal buildings a new pop-up restaurant found a home: Postgarage. Filled with industrial charm and history: you sit behind an original bullet proof glass counter, the chandelier brightened up the Erlkönig restaurant beforehand, the plates are from the former Atlantis hotel and the sofas are remodelled army beds. The menu is traditional like your cool grandma used to make: All ingredients are fresh, seasonal and local. Food that makes you happy and warms you up. I’m sure you don’t mind a pinch of heat in the (finally) wintery weather, so I have a voucher for 80 francs to give away. Just send me an e-mail.

Gwyneth does it, Kate does, everyone's doing it: Knitting is the new sex. If you’re looking for the perfect wool, try Frau Wolle. Under their label Anna & Juan it is their goal to work with locally produced materials and natural dyes. In their shop you'll find wool-, linen- and silk-threads, knitting and crochet needles as well as their own line of accessories and magazines.

There’s a starman waiting in the sky

Like the words of a black magic spell, there are some phrases that should never be spoken out loud. ‘David Bowie is dead’ is one such incantation and yet, here we are. There are plenty of his classic songs to choose as a tribute but you already know those. Here’s a more obscure one from his younger days before he transformed into the wild-eyed shapeshifter that changed the world. The song is called ‘Memory Of A Free Festival’ and the final repeating refrain of 'The sun machine is coming down and we’re gonna have a party’ seems a strangely appropriate way to say goodbye.

Dear Baroness, Why do men always seem to over promise and under deliver?

Dear Baroness,

I need your advice. Here’s my situation: I keep meeting men. Nice men. Online and in real life. Sometimes we just chat, and sometimes we actually meet in person. A few I’ve gone out with several times. And one guy I actually started dating. I think. I would call it dating, at least.

The problem is, I keep meeting these nice men who seem to think it’s important to make these promises, or drop these hints. They say things that make me have expectations, like, 'We should go away together for a weekend.' Or 'What kind of perfume do you like?' and, while window shopping, 'Which one do you want?' (referring to jewelry, or lingerie or clothes, whatever).

It is weird that I get my hopes up? That I actually look forward to a trip away or a gift? And then, when it doesn’t happen, I get really disappointed. Like a little kid.

What’s the deal? Should I lower my expectations or find better men?
