The name of this event may be poignantly beautiful but ‘ Time has fallen asleep in the afternoon sunshine’ is a performance piece based on Ray Bradbury’s dystopian novel, Fahrenheit 451. In the novel, books are outlawed and burnt by the state, but an underground resistance group memorises them in order to save them for future generations. At the PBZ Bibliothek Altstadt you can spend time in the company of living books. The performers have learnt by heart their favourite books and will be wandering or sitting around the library waiting for you to pick them up and browse the pages of their mind. The chosen books are in both English and German, and you’ll need to reserve your place via [email protected].
Thursday & Friday 12.30 pm to 6 pm, Saturday 10 am to 3 pm, PBZ Bibliothek Altstadt, Zähringerstrasse 17

Sunny weatherall → Parties

Andrew Weatherall is one of a select group of djs that have managed to soundtrack and shape modern pop culture. In the Nineties he merged rock and club sensibilities when producing albums for Happy Mondays, New Order and, most influentially, Primal Scream's, Screamadelica. He's been at the forefront of techno, house and Balearic music over the last twenty-five years and, hell, even has an entire two-day music festival named after him in the south of France. If you want to hear what all the fuss is about, he'll be djing, alongside Timothy J Fairplay, at Zukunft on Friday night.
Friday 12 am, Zukunft

Ethio-jazz → Live (concerts)

It’s rare that a musician can be credited with starting an entirely new musical genre but legendary Ethiopian musician Mulatu Astatke, also known as the Godfather of Ethio-jazz, is one such man. In the early 60’s he moved from Ethiopia to London and New York to study music, on his return home he brought with him the jazz, funk and Latin influences he had absorbed, combined them with traditional Ethiopian folk music and instrumentation - and Ethio-jazz was born. If you want to get a feel for the music, you can listen to the video above or watch the fantastic Bill Murray/Jim Jarmusch comedy, Broken Flowers, whose soundtrack was full of Astatke’s songs. He’ll be playing live with his band at Moods on Saturday evening.
Saturday 8.30 pm, Moods

Shop ‘til you slop → Market/Fair

If you want to listen to a great dj set, drink at a bar and at the same time do a little high-class flea market shopping, then it seems as if Slop Shop has been reading your ever-demanding mind. This Saturday in Plaza, Slop Shop will be bringing you an indoor market full of stalls selling a mixture of second-hand and new products including jewellery, fashion and items from local designers. Dj Mike Steez will be providing the soundtrack to your shopping bliss. Free entry.
Saturday 12 pm to 6 pm, Plaza

East London, West coast → Live (concerts)

Jay Prince is a rapper and emcee from East London, the birthplace of grime music, and while grime is often defined by its hard-edged beats and dark urban menace, Jay Prince seems to have swapped his musical roots for the mellow sunshine vistas of America’s West coast. And who doesn’t need a bit of that during a cold wet February? He raps over old R&B and soul samples and beats that crackle with analog warmth. You can almost hear the dust floating across the vinyl. His rapping style also borrows from the West coast as, if you close your eyes, you could be forgiven for thinking Kendrick Lamar has wandered into the building. He’ll be playing at Exil on Sunday night.
Sunday 7 pm, Exil

Eating: Strangers in the night

You care about good food? You want to expand your circle of friends? Then spoontano has a good offer for you. Register now and go to dinner with like-minded people in Zurich between 15th and 19th February. Where you’ll end up is a surprise, as is who'll be sharing your table, unless you book «plus one friend» if you don’t want to face a table of strangers alone. I wish I could be the little mouse in the corner, observing everything. But as a mouse in a restaurant would be disgusting, I’ll be waiting for your tales in the comment box below.

Good to know: Happy Dada-Day

Friday is the official start of the 100-year Dada anniversary with three exhibitions dedicated to this art genre that never wanted to grow up. Cabaret Voltaire – the house where the Dada movement started at Niederdorf – hosts «Obsession Dada», based on documents of curator Harald Szeemann. Kunsthaus shows «Dadaglobe Reconstructed» with more than 200 works. And Landesmuseum explains in «Dada Universal» how the movement became global. You might think that you’re not into Dada – but that was before you knew that your 50-franc-bill is actually Dada too. Sophie Taeuber-Arp – who is the face on the bill – was the only Swiss woman who signed the Dada manifesto. Enjoy your day with a bit of Dada – either at the museum or in a shop.

Web tip: Pictures for free

In January, the New York Public Library put more than 180‘000 pictures online, whose copyright had expired. You can download images, maps and documents of the collection for free without restrictions. I recommend the album Changing New York that offers insights into the metropolis in the 1930's.
