Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 12.5.2016: London calling, i'm kinky & time to swim

Zurich Photo Trip → City Talk

Contest: London calling → Film events

The Nice Guys is the new comi-drama movie starring Russell ‘The Crow’ Crowe and Ryan ‘The Goz’ Gosling, about a couple of LA detectives set in the 1970’s, and I have two tickets to give away. That’s great Ron, I hear you scream, but where’s it being screened? Well, dear Ronster, it’s being shown in London, and I also have two tickets to give away for a flight and hotel room to make seeing the film a little easier. The premiere night is next Thursday, 19th May, but if you want a chance to win the tickets, flight and hotel then please e-mail me by this Friday (13th May). E-mail me.
Movie: Thursday 19th May, London. Entries: Friday 13th May, Zurich

Project: No cars go → Events (various)

If you’ve ever walked along the Viadukt, you may have realised that, at one time, there was a rail track running across it. Bahnhof Letten was the now-defunct station that served this line. The station building has protected status, but there has been an ongoing debate as to what to do with the former car park next to it. In a decision that shows there is hope for humankind, rather than being turned into office blocks, the space is being given over to the neighbourhood to create an experimental creative zone, and the opening day is on Saturday. During the day they’ll have yoga sessions, brunch, a print workshop and a kids program. During the afternoon/evening they’ll have a number of local bands playing live. Food will be available on the grill and drinks from the new bar that is opening.
Saturday from 9.30 am, Park Platz, Wasserwerkstrasse 101, 8037

Concert: Do it yourself → Live (concerts)

Conner Youngblood is very much a one-man show. He writes, produces and plays all the instruments on his tracks. He even designs and draws the cover art for his albums. Given his clear talent, it’s no wonder that his music manages to cram different genres into one beautiful whole. If you’ve got a hankering for chillwave soundscapes, hip hop beats and folktronica layered under a voice that’s as fragile as a broken heart, then he’ll be playing live at Exil on Saturday, and I have 2 x 2 tickets to give away. E-mail me.
Saturday 7 pm, Exil, Hardstrasse 245, 8005

Exhibition: Art exchange → Vernissages & exhibitions

If you’ve ever wandered around a gallery wishing you could take one of the art pieces home with you, but you aren’t a millionaire or you’re pretty sure you couldn’t sneak it under your jacket without anyone noticing, then the Tausch Rausch at LangstrassenKultur is for you. Twenty artists have created unique pieces that they will be showing at the exhibition, and if you want to take one home all you need to do is write down what you’re willing to give in exchange. It might be to cook a dinner, your favourite teddy bear or even something you’ve created yourself. But definitely no cash. At the end of the exhibition each artist will exchange their art for whichever proposals they like best. The exhibition is followed by a concert from acoustic-rocker Fabe Vega, with a pop-up Mexican bistro.
Saturday 3 pm (Exhibition), 10 pm (Concert), LangstrassenKultur, Langstrasse 113a, 8004

Concert: I’m Kinky → Live (concerts)

There's an old joke in which a nymphomaniac tells a businessman in a bar that she only finds Jewish cowboys sexy. After a moments thought, he smiles and introduces himself as Broncho Goldstein. Now, you may think Jewish cowboys are few and far between but in fact there's only one - and his name is Kinky Friedman. Not only is he a famous country music star, having shared stages with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson, but he's also a well-known novelist, journalist and politician, having run for Governor of Texas. It's his music that he'll be bringing to Bogen F on Wednesday, and while he plays those deep country cuts as good as anyone, he also lets his acerbic humour have full flight with songs like 'They Ain't Makin' Jews like Jesus Anymore'.
Wednesday 9 pm, Bogen F, Viaduktstrasse 97, 8005

Eating: The sweetest things

I don't recall when cupcakes arrived in Zurich but over the last few years, shops and services popped up all around the city. One of them is Oh sweetest thing: This service by Fräulein Meier - only a few selected are on first name terms - specialises in customized orders. Currently, their regular sweet things are on holiday – and replaced by weird and wonderful flavours.
Oh sweetest thing, Kalkbreitestr. 10, 8003. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 7 am to 7 pm, Saturday 10 am to 5 pm

Shopping tip: The nicest things

Circle is the nicest shop in the world. With nice I don't mean the interior or their brands – though they are very nice too. I mean nice in the sense of good, honest, down to earth, sustainable. It's like your granny but better dressed and more up to date. Circle only stocks labels that don't hurt or exploit anyone. So if you're up for this new spirit: they host an apero for their latest footware brand ekn from Germany this Saturday at 5 pm. This also gives you the chance to check out the label Rondechute from Fribourg who recently joined the shop as well.
Circle, Brungasse 3, 8001. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 11 am to 6 pm, Thursday 11 am to 7.30 pm, Saturday 10 am to 6 pm

Reading: The weirdest things

There are over five million articles in the English Wikipedia. And then there are those that Wikipedians have identified as being a bit unusual. These articles are verifiable, valuable contributions but are a bit odd or whimsical. Such as an article about a dance plague or about Büsingen am Hochrhein, a German town that is fully contained within Switzerland. Enjoy your long weekend and touch up on your trivia.

Good to know: Time to swim

Looking outside, I'm sure summer is on its way - but not quiet here yet! Nonetheless, this Saturday is the official start of the swimming season in Zurich. So all pools, including lake and river will be open. Most venues have their own website - on which you also find out about on-going events, such as open air cinema, BBQ evening and parties. The website of the city council provides a good overview of all venues with pictures and details. Until the end of May, you get the season ticket for all pools in the online shop of Zurich's city council with a 10 % discount.
