I'm finally back from my vacation. I hope you didn't miss me too much (although i've been thinking of you every day). Firstly, i'd like to thank everyone who came, and took part in, Rooftop Day a couple of weeks ago. It was a fantastic day and night and, thankfully, the rain gods were merciful. Now that i am back though, and have brought the summer with me, i'm very happy to present you with my latest newsletter.

Party: Sound and vision
 
If you're wanting to hear cutting edge music of every conceivable genre, played 24/7 for your aural pleasure, then  GDS.FM should be your Zurich digital radio sender of choice, and for the month of July you'll be able to see, as well as listen to them, as they take over Elisaburg with the Live Radio Festival. Each night they'll have a selection of live gigs and djs, as well as parties into the early hours. The 'soft' opening night is tonight (Thursday) but the real schenanigans begin on the opening weekend nights of this Friday and Saturday, where you can see None of Them and True play live, with djs Max Bunt & Gino, Playlove, Erika Fatna and  Boolz & Leneave playing late into night. Festival: Dancing in the street
 

If you’re in Zurich this weekend then the Züri Fäscht will be as unavoidable as a brightly coloured clown with stalking tendencies. There’ll be 100’s of food and drink stands, funfair rides, lake fireworks (Fri & Sat 10.30 pm) and party tents, but I thought I’d pick out a few places that seem like they will enhance the general chaos and fun of the weekend. At Seebad Enge, they have two nights of local live bands and djs where you can party until you see the morning sun rise over the lake. In the old town courtyard of Graue Gasse there’ll be 25 international and Swiss djs creating a mini electronic dance music festival. If you like to do your partying on the riverbank, then Schipfe have 3 nights of electronica, techno and theatre. Those busy bees at Hive club will fly outside to the Arboretum, next to the lakeside aviary, for three nights of clubbing under the stars. If you’re looking for a dream concert line-up how does Tina Turner, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors and Pink Floyd sound? Züri Rockt have assured me that all these (possibly not original) acts will be playing on the Grossmünster-Platz over the weekend. Exil will be turning the Chinawiese (in front of the China Garden) into an indie-rock-stravaganza, as their djs blast out the sounds of skinny white boys with electric guitars.

Cinema: Cult cartoon
 
Robert Crumb is often considered one of America's greatest cartoonists and counter-cultural artists, managing to combine American folk art stylings of the early 20th Century with the social satire, provocative stance and sexual openess of the late 20th. In 1995, Terry Zwigoff, a good friend of Crumb, produced and directed a ground breaking documentary about him that explored, not only his art, but also the connections between creativity and craziness, and the deep roots of family loyalty. This intimate and revealing film is being show at Riff Raff on Saturday, in conjunction with the Cartoonmuseum in Basel. The director will be in attendance for an end of evening Q&A. There are also rumours that Robert Crumb himself may be making an appearance, although, just like the man, details are being shrouded in a cloud of mystery. I have 2x2 tickets to give away. Concert: Green grooves
 

Bäckeranlage is a great green oasis in the middle of the Kreis 4 hubbub, and over the next couple of months, on Wednesday evenings, it'll be playing host to some free open-air concerts featuring local Zurich talent.
This Wednesday (6th July) sees Rich Man’s Kitchen Orchestra playing their musical gumbo of blues, calypso and ska out in the park. Other evening highlights include the soul-punk of Sissy Fox (13th July), the dirty blues of Les Voda (27th July) and the acoustic mellowness of Tobias Carshey  (17th August). Swimming: The grass is greener…
 

I know you come here looking for fun and frolics but what about a challenge? The lake lies before us like a great big watery tease. Its far shore looking close enough to reach but, then again, just maybe a little too far. Well, enough with the teasing and let's show this lake what we're really made of. Every year, since 1985, the city fathers organise a lake-crossing swim called Seeüberquerung. From Strandbad Mythenquai to Strandbad Tiefenbrunnen, it's a 1500 metre crossing but with little boats and buoys along the way in case you need a rest or something to hold on to. Your clothes will be transferred to the opposite shore, where you'll also be met with a warm soup, a drink and a total sense of accomplishment and pride. It's all weather dependent, so check the website on Monday to make sure it's happening. The alternate dates are 13th July and 24 th August. You can register to take part on the day.

Eating: good wood food
 
 

Wood was the first thing humans used to cook with, and we never really improved on it. It imbues everything it cooks with the taste of fire, forests and freedom. A new pop-up restaurant called Wood Food is opening for the next couple of weeks and will be creating all their dishes in a wood-fuelled open fire kitchen. Their focus is as much on the process of cooking as it is on the food itself. All the dishes are creative delights using locally sourced ingredients and, in the spirit of our ancient ancestors, you'll eat at a single communal long table. They also have a bar with cocktails, beers and natural wines to linger at, even if you’re not partaking of the feast.

Good to know: Closed for summer
 
I love spending summer in the city, mostly because Zurich is half empty and it feels like the place belongs only to me . Which is also the reason (or so they say) for several clubs to take a break during this time. So before heading to Kauz, Moods or Zukunft over the next weeks, check out their websites before standing in front of locked doors. Alte Kaserne is also closed until mid-August, Frieda's Büxe until 23rd July and Exil during August. But there are some who think of us, and remain open during the summer nights:  Stall6,  Gonzo,  Hive,  Mascotte,  Supermarket &  Revier.
 
 
 
Eating: Real Food
 
 About 6 months ago, i told you about the newly opening Ayla Real Food delivery service, where you can order online from their fine menu of exotic salads, meze dishes, sandwiches, smoothies and desserts and have them delivered to your home or work place. Well, now Aylin, the lady behind the concept, has opened a new small take-away shop on Gasometerstrasse - all the same gorgeous cuisine with the added benefit a short walk beforehand.
