Party: Behind the scenes

If you call someone '0815' in Switzerland then you're really saying that they're pretty average; boring; non-Ronsters, but even the most seemingly-boring people can often have a freaky party going on behind their vanilla facades. And so it is with the 0815 bar on Saturday. In the courtyard behind this city centre bar you'll find yourself in a musical wonderland, as some of the dj regulars from Hive spread their honey-tinged wings and head for the open sky. Djs  Jimi Jules, Solok and Yannik Cserhati will be joined by Berlin duo Kotelett & Zadak.

Saturday 3 pm to 11 pm, 0815Linthescher-Gasse 23, 8001

Festival: Letten the sunshine in

If you're going to spend any time in the city during the summer, chances are that at some point you'll end up lounging, swimming, drinking and generally chilling on the riverside at the Primitivo and Stazione Paradiso bars.  Like tropical blooms these places disappear during the winter months but return, full of colour and life, every summer. This Saturday, they'll be joining forces and putting on a big party called Lettenfest . They'll have a choice selection of local live bands and djs to entertain you throughout the day and night and, if your hot partying ways get the better of you, you're just a short slip and slide away from the cool of the river.

Saturday 1 pm to 11 pm, Primitivo and Stazione Paradiso, Oberer Letten, Klosterfahrweg, 8037

Party: Dancing in the street

The Plaza Club isn't known for it's outdoor summer terrace so, with the sun shining, they've just thought, 'screw it, let's take over the street instead', and on Sunday that's just what they're doing. The exTELLent StreetFest will be taking place outside Plaza on Ankerstrasse, and will have Swiss band Suspenders playing live, with djs  Si Disco and Louis de Fumer adding to the club vibe. They'll also have some streetfood stalls, a bar and lounge area. After midnight the party moves back inside, as the 1st August celebrations get fully underway with more djs and a surprise midnight music act. The StreetFest is free to enter but the indoor party requires tickets.
Sunday 5 pm to 12 am, Plaza StreetFest (Ankerstrasse),  11 pm to 5 am, Plaza

Festival: Happy Swiss Day

That holiday you've been given on Monday isn't just because you've been extra diligent at work, although we all know that's true but is, of course, to celebrate Swiss National Day. Now, if you really want to get your Swiss game-face on, you could maybe eat brunch at one of the farms in the Zurich area, join the official celebrations or even ride a cow on a cow-trekking dayIf you'd prefer to dial it back a little and just enjoy a party or two in town, then you could try the Äms Fäascht. The event at Bäckeranlage is promoting itself as the Multicultural Alternative to 1st August. Bands, singers and even comedians who reflect the international diversity of Zurich will be playing. You'll also be able to try food from Sri Lanka, Senegal, Tibet and Chile.

Monday 2 pm, Äms Fäascht, Bäckeranlage

Concert: Everything and more

'Too many cooks spoil the broth' is an old proverb that warns of the dangers of having too many ideas and people involved with a project, and eventually ruining it, but in the case of the 11-member band,  G.Rag y los Hermanos Patchekos, these musical cooks throw together ingredients of the most unusual kind and still end up with a hearty gumbo of danceable delights. They take a sprinkle of punk, a pinch of folk, a soupcon of ska, then turn up the heat and serve with a side-helping of mariachi. If you're tired of the mundane and want a little of the insane, then these boys will be bringing it to El Lokal on Monday night. Free entry.

Monday 8 pm, El Lokal

Good to know: Why the metric system matters

The metric system has been around for a while and if you grew up in Switzerland, it's very simple to use it. I'm aware that residents of the US or the UK find it a bit more difficult. Even though the metric system has been officially sanctioned for use in the United States since 1866, it has not been adopted in public, and the same can be said about the UK as well as Liberia and Myanmar. If you struggle with the metric system, just use a converter. Or check out the video to understand why the metric system matters and how it links the failure of the Mars Climate Orbiter to the French Revolution.

Eating: Oriental roots

About one and a half years ago, I told you about the great Ayla Real Food delivery – I'm sure you remember that. However, I repeat my suggestion because Ayla just opened a small take away, a vegetarian food concept shop with Oriental roots. And of course they still deliver. The range fits the warm weather with fresh salads, mezze and tasty sandwiches. Enjoy!

Shopping tip: Catching the wave

The scene where they surf in space to the soundtrack of Beastie Boys' Sabotage, in the latest Star Trek film, is my favourite part of the movie. Combining the soundtrack of my youth with one of my favourite pastimes – it doesn't get any better. But staying with surfing. I noticed lately that more and more girls have picked up that sport, and if you're looking for the right outfit, I know where you should go. The bikini label Main Design creates, well, bikinis, that look good and won't let you down when catching a wave. Finnish Tina and Swiss Sabrina – the designers – test all their creations themselves and just launched their online-shop.

Web tip: Pop culture against pot holes

Jim Bacher mends pot holes in Chicago. But instead of just filling them with plain concrete, he adds colourful mosaics. In the beginning he put together lovely but rather unspectacular flower images. But lately he immortalises symbols of our pop culture: Burgers, ice cream, cigarettes, cans… Check here for more pictures
