Cinema: In bloom

If a blooming garden is the equivalent of a cinema for the senses, then it makes sense that Frau Gerold's Garten should be hosting a blooming cinema. It's the opening night tonight (Thursday) of Bloom, Frau Gerold's openair Gartenkino with the premiere of the smart rom-com, Maggie's Plan, and will be going on until the 28th August, with a great selection of movies that manages to steer clear of the mainstream, yet still offers a bouquet of delights. They'll also have a grill and pizza's on offer for the meaties and veggies among you, with additional ice cream and pop-corn for the plain foolhardy. Most films, but not all, will be shown in English, or with English subtitles, so check first before going. You can preorder tickets at ticketino, or at the box-office from 6 pm.

Thursday to 28th August, from 6 pm, films start after dark, Frau Gerold's Garten

Party: 24-hour party people

Radio Lora is the oldest alternative music radio sender in Switzerland, and since 1983 has been based in Zurich. To show the young digital whippersnappers that being older can also make you bolder, they will be hosting a non-stop 10-day/24-hour DJ Marathon starting on Friday evening. The line-up of dj's and live acts is as eclectic and alternative as you might expect, and they'll also be breaking out of the studio with some live band and dj appearances around town - Friday at Bagatelle, Saturday at Xenix, Monday at Boschbar and Wednesday at OOR Saloon. For the full radio line-up, live appearances and times, see here.

Friday to 15th August, Radio Lora 97.5 MHz and various locations around town

Party: Inside Hive

This year's summer has so far been a fickle mistress. One moment lavishing us with sunshine and glory, the next grey skies and rain. If you just want to get your music fix this weekend without worrying whether to bring a plastic poncho, then Hive have come up with the easiest of solutions for you - they're having a mini electronica-festival, and they're having it indoors. Let's see what the damn rain thinks about that! The live headliner is minimalist-house producer Isolée from Pampa Records in Hamburg. Also playing live will be Dragon Suplex, Dirty Sandwich and Elevator Moving. These will be followed by a hearty serving of djay, with  Jimi Jules, Gleichschritt, Nici Faerber, Co.mini, Matija, Fabri, Mewa & Moglee and Sayan Sobuth playing you through to the early hours of Sunday morning.

Saturday 11 pm, Hive

Concert: Rustic rapture

If i were to choose the perfect situation in which to see an indie-folk band play their melodic and ghostly songs, it would be sitting on the porch of an old wooden house, as a warm breeze slips off of a blue lake and the summer sun, glistening through the trees, leaves me dappled and drowsy. Well, as coincidence would have it, this is exactly what's happening on Wednesday evening as Josh, a Zurich-based indie-folk band, play their beautiful ethereal songs live at  Atelier Hermann Haller. The Atelier itself is almost a hundred years old, and is one of the last examples of all-wooden Bauhaus architecture in Europe. It's also one of Zurich's hidden gems and well worth a visit, whether you're fantasising about perfect gig locations or not. Free entry.

Wednesday 8 pm, Atelier Hermann Haller, Höschgasse 8a, 8008

Good to know: Landesmuseum I: New wings

While the older part of the Swiss National Museum (Landesmuseum) looks like a castle, the latest addition is certainly modern. If you were wondering what was being built just next to the main station – the new wing of the museum is now finished and open to the public. The park surrounding the museum is called the Platzspitz, but was also known as  Needle Park in the 1980's. Heroin addicts gathered, dealt and lived there for years. The police weren’t allowed to enter the park or make arrests. However, the lack of control caused a multitude of problems. Drug dealers and users arrived from all over Europe, and crime became rampant as dealers fought for control and addicts (who numbered up to 20,000) stole to support their habit. The once-beautiful gardens had degraded into a mess and the emergency services were overwhelmed with the number of overdoses. In 1992 the police moved in to clear up the park and closed down the open drug scene. It took many years to revive that part of town, the area - including Letten – was unsafe and kept a bad reputation for a long time before it became as popular as it is today.

Eating: Landesmuseum II: New kid on the block

Spitz means pointy or horny in German and I'm sure the guys behind the new restaurant/bar/bistro at Landesmuseum had a good chuckle when handing in their gastro-concept to the board. Of course it's a reference to the Platzspitz Park where it's located. Yesterday, the new venue opened its doors and, as it's right by the river, next to the main station, as well as some culture (it being part of the museum), I'm sure it will attract a lot of visitors. And if I tell you that the team behind it are the same guys who are involved in Zukunft, Kauz, and Café des Amis, I'm sure you'll be tempted to check it out too.
Spitz, Museumsstrasse 2, 8001. Opening hours: Restaurant & Bistro: Monday 11.30 am to 12 am (just restaurant), Tuesday to Sunday 10 am to 12 pm. Bar: Monday to Thursday and Sunday 5 pm to 12 am, Friday & Saturday 5 pm to 2 am

Party: Landesmuseum III: Radio World

To everything there is a season. Although I'm pretty sure the writers of those words weren't referring to Zurich's summer nightlife when they wrote them, it applies beautifully to the annual 30-day sound blast that is  Rundfunk.fm. Starting this Friday, as it has for the past 16 years, Rundfunk will take over the radio and Internet airwaves of Zurich, and the world. This year the plethora of  international djs and music makers will be broadcasting and playing live from the Landesmuseum. In addition to the music, there'll also be drinks and food on offer, as this corner of Zurich becomes a broadcasting beacon to the world. Free entry.

Friday to 3rd Sept, 5 pm to 12 am, Landesmuseum

Shopping tip: Tailored shoes

Looking for a new pair of shoes, I came across Le Majordome in Kreis 5, where you get customised footwear. First your feet are measured and then you get to choose model, form, leather etc. until you find the perfect fit. Afterwards the details are sent to a traditional shoemaker in Southern Spain, who will then send you the shoes of dreams. Of course they cost a bit more than normal but they are extremely comfortable and last much longer than your usual gear. Plus bespoke, handmade shoes are kind of cool!
