Zurich (EN) : Zurich 08.12.2022: Painting, London & Trams

Good Morning Ronster

Don't know about you, but in my case this cold means i am only spending time outside to a) catch a tram or bus b) go to my local supermarket for groceries and c) make my way to some form of indoor entertainment ...luckily there is loads of entertainment on the menu this week, from concerts to stand-up to painting and even indoor outdoor sports! And speaking of trams, a new line takes you around and beyond the city so that means even less time spent in the cold! Scroll down for the details. And if you are one of those who only makes it to the nearest supermarket, well i have a lovely soup recipe for you. Happy freezing and...

Give my love to the city,

Good to know: Sipping & Painting

Fancy flexing those creative muscles? Then a new pop-up studio has…er…popped up in the Wiedikon area of the city. Atelier Nebu invites you to sip a few drinks and paint your own unique designs onto their ceramic products. Once you have created your special design it resides with them, (presumably so they can cook it in a kiln,) and you pick it up later. Sipping a negroni or a glühwein whilst painting sounds fun doesn’t it? Well, they are there until the 29th of January so book now and get creating.

Concert: London Calling

My favourite jazz club, Moods have a wonderful concert series called «London Calling» which showcases new and interesting artists from, you guessed it, London. This Saturday they are featuring 21 year old singer/songwriter Rosie Fraytor-Taylor and her trio. Her music is a kind of cross over between Joni Mitchell with a bit of George Benson and Lewis Taylor thrown in. Super cool, laid back and groovy. Click the buttons to check her out here.

Concert: Sunday Rock

Head to Dynamo to finish your weekend with a (head)banger at the concert of the Canadian rockband Danko Jones. This epic Canadian trio exerts more power than a big band with just drums, bass, guitarre and singing. Inspired by bands like KISS & AC/DC, they are guaranteed to scratch your classic rock itch. Hit the button to get you in the mood.

Film: Armchair Outdoor Sports

I have a love-hate relationship with outdoor sports. Take skiing for example. I love the kick of the speed heading down the slopes, the beautiful light reflected off the snow and the fresh mountain air. After an hour or so on the slopes though, i start feeling my toes going numb and at one point i’ll inevitably tumble, planting my face in ice cold wet snow. Ugh. If you want the thrill of outdoor sports without the downsides, join me to watch the most amazing winter sport scenes from the comfort of a cinema seat at the European Outdoor Film Tour in Volkshaus. You’ll find me there, dry, warm, cosy, with a bag of popcorn in one hand and a cold one in the other. Heaven!

Comedy: Not A Drug Dealer

Dark days call for light hearts, and nothing will make you feel lighter than the hilarious stand-up comedy of Malinda Perera with his hour-long solo show entitled «Not A Drug Dealer», where he shares his experiences as a brown man in Europe. Perera was born and raised in Colombo, then moved to Vienna, where he met great success as a stand-up comedian and he even set up his own English speaking comedy club in the city. Then he moved to Dublin and did the same thing all over again. If that doesn’t impress you, his comedy will. Grab your tickets now.

Workshop: The Way To DJ

Have you ever dreamed of becoming a DJ? What could be better than the adoring fans, VIP club access and seeing all those happy faces on the dance floor? The only downside is you have to be able to DJ so, if you want to hone those skills then Sender are running a DJ workshop this Wednesday with the KOKON collective teaching you the basics. Try out with a USB stick or vinyl and they’ll turn you into a Carl Cox or Deadmau5 in no time.

Good to know: Limmat Is No Longer Off Limits

I am a massive fan of public transport and, (at least for me,) it always feels like a small triumph when a new connection opens. And I always enjoy taking that first ride on a tram or train line that is totally new. This weekend sees the opening of the T20 tram line that connects Altstetten with outlying villages in the Limmat valley. The new line runs through Schlieren, Dietikon and terminates at Killwangen-Spreitenbach so will massively improve connections if you live or wish to shop in the sprawling shopping complex that exists in Spreitenbach. The Limmatbahn as it is known is also celebrating its opening this Saturday with a little party with an ice-disco and food and drink on Saturday so if you want to check out the new line head over to Dietikon from midday.
