Zurich (EN) : Thursday, 13.11.08: American dream, petrol heads & personal party places

Cancellation

Apologies: The Sly & Robbie concert that we recommended last week was cancelled at awfully short notice, so let’s hope you didn’t find yourself banging on closed doors - and that you found a good alternative event. Barring any unforeseen circumstances I hope all of this week’s tips will go ahead as scheduled.
Give my love to the city,
Ron

Film

On the road: What happens when a crew of French men go in search of the American dream? Spending a year and a half on the road, Romain Gavras, So-Me and the duo from Justice filmed their own US tour. A preview of the documentary, called A Cross The Universe, is being shown at The Gloss. The DVD comes with a live show from Justice's concert in San Francisco - so get ready for some good electro beats.
Thursday 7.30-9 pm, Hardstrasse 312

Art

Arty party: If you’ve not seen enough art this year, then this might be the event to top up your levels. The exhibition Kunst 08 Zürich takes place from the 14-17 November with international galleries, emerging and established artists, award shows, public discussions and a party at Kaufleuten (on Saturday). I have 2 pairs of tickets for the event and the party to give away. The tickets also include entry to museums in Zurich and Winterthur.
Friday 4-10 pm, ABB-Halle

Concerts

Folk and psychedelic: C. Gibbs' latest folk album was recorded with Lucinda Black Bear, a neo-folk band from NYC. The results can be heard at Helsinki, velvety songs full of longing. If you prefer concerts during the week, the Scottish band Mogwai plays at Rote Fabrik on Tuesday. I love their thickly-woven tapestries of sound.
Friday 9.30 pm, Helsinki
Tuesday 9 pm, Rote Fabrik

Party

Label launch: Cityfox presents its DJ night at Alte Börse. Behind the desks are Lee Curtiss - Cityfox's first producer – who’s coming straight from Detroit to join Jeremy P. Caulfield from Berlin and Zurich DJs Rino, Sampayo and San Marco. If you like minimal – be there!
Saturday 11 pm, Alte Börse

Music

Swiss music: Suffering a bad case of Sunday blues? La Catrina now opens its doors on the quietest day of the week with the best local sounds from groups and artistes in Switzerland - on the jukebox or with DJs. And if you like what you hear, you can buy the album with your next drink at the bar.
Sunday 6 pm, La Catrina

Weeknight affair

For petrol heads: Geneva may have the international car show, but we’ve got the Razzia Seefeld - Grand Prix fever on vinyl and on screen this Monday. Kunstgriff & Motorsportfriends show their vintage 16 mm car race films featuring classic rallies from the 50s to the 70s with F1 and the Indy 500, accompanied by tunes from the era.
Monday 8 pm, Razzia

Good to know

A Zurich saying goes:
“you only become local after you’ve organised a party”. So here are a few tips on how to find the right venue for the right event. Bar/Restaurant: Of all the options it's often easiest to rent part of a bar or restaurant or the entire venue. Most deals will allow you to get the room for free but you’ll have to agree to spend an agreed amount at the bar. In Acapulco you’ll get a lounge if you drink 250 francs or more and in Silber or Favorit you can party in complete privacy for 1,000 francs at the bar. Community centres: Shortened to GZ in Zurich (from Gemeinschaftszentrum) these rooms have the advantage that they're cheap. On the downside they look like community halls – few charms. Personally I like the GZ Wollishofen by the lake which hosts about 70 people, or the ship Stäfa which is moored right next to it. Large rooms: For larger parties with a few hundred guests you’ll need a larger room. Here are my top choices: Härterei (Maag Areal), EWZ (Selnaustrasse 25) or the Papiersaal (Sihlcity). Outdoors: Even if winter isn’t the right season, outdoor parties still need to be planned in advance. Forest cabins are great places to celebrate in the woods with a barbeque. All sorts: Zurich tourism lists weird and wonderful rentable properties in and around the city.

Web

South Park: After the US election result, I reckon anything is possible, so just imagine if Barack Obama and John McCain were actually in league with each other and, along with their respective Vice Presidents, they planned a huge diamond robbery underneath the White House. No, really, it’s true! Just watch the new South Park series.
And here’s a selection of election maps from different international media.

Eating

Asian cuisine: Nagasui offers freshly-prepared Asian dishes without too much fuss but with the highest attention to detail. The quality and service far exceed the reasonable cost of the menu. The restaurant is located in the coolest high-rise in the city at Selnaustrasse 16. Prefer to eat in? There’s also a take-away option. You can always order a classic cocktail while waiting to trundle with your bundle.
